I don't know if we can get a poll on this or not, but I would be interested to see how the majority of BGPer's view themselves in regard to this.

I consider myself a capitalist.

Socialism would probably work in theory but never, never, never, never in the real world.

I am a capitalist, the free market will allocate the resources of the economy correctly (in most markets). Only in those limited markets does the government need to intervene.

Capitalist but plans to help those that physically/mentally cannot fend for themselves. Think autism, MD kids, and the like.

I second that motion :thumb:

I totally agree with the bolded statement. It's a fantastic idea on paper, but there's no way it would actually work, especially in the U.S.

I do believe governement regulations and standards must be in place to have a workable economy, however.

I think that's called Social-Conservative, which is what I consider myself.

I very seriously doubt there is a single socialist that posts on this message board. Capitalism is a broad term that encompasses a plethora of economic policies. Someone who wants increased government spending on welfare, healthcare, or aid isn’t a socialist. Someone who wants the nationalization of all domestic industries with the government, rather than supply and demand, dictating how much of something should be produced or sold and at what price it should be sold at would be a socialst. I think the real question asked here is whether we are social capitalist or laissez fair capitalist, or, possibly, some other branch of capitalism.

I understand that there are a lot of gray areas in regard to this, I just wanted to get a feel where most stood if that had to choose one or the other. I am surprised to see two votes already for socialist.

I am a Sociocapitalist! I like the free market, but I think somethings like the Domestic Oil Companies need to be government regulated.

So I guess you picked both options in the poll? Doesn't your statement contradict itself? How can you say you like the free market, and then say you support government regulations on market based companies?

Some market based industries. Its called moderation.

So where do you draw the line? I feel that government regulation of markets is detrimental to society.

I feel like some markets need to regulated (mostly ones with inelastic demands and elastic supply) but most don't.

The energy market in left unregulated is unhealthy. Ask California and some other midwest states, and those involved with Enron.

Whether you are Hobbesian or Lockeian (if those are actually words) on the basic nature of mankind, you have to agree that society corrupts the good man and the bad man corrupts society - therefore we enter into a social contract and give up some of our rights (pure greed) for the good of the whole society.

Pure market capitalism without regulation or government oversight also gives us the late 1920, early 1930s and the 200os;)

Mixed Market Economics is my thing - leaning more to the left.

Economies of scale sometimes make programs more efficient so they are better when run by the government.
