Any idea on the scholarship situation at MSU. Is there any proposal, to add?

 

If the NCAA expands the Division I-AA playoffs to 24 teams and the PFL gets a bid, there is no need for Morehead to give scholarships. I, for one, hope this happens. There are kids working hard at those non-scholly leagues and they should get a shot at the playoffs.

From a financial standpoint, I will disagree with you. I'm certain many student-athletes and families, would like to have scholarship money available.

At Morehead they dont even get sweat suits to wear. These players get nothing there.

I for one would love to see Dayton change things and get s-ships going.

Maybe Morehead, as a public school, can find the resources to make scholarships happen for them. I can't deny for a minute that non-scholarship football is most likely a dying animal. There are only, I believe, 13 schools playing FCS non-scholarship and the NCAA has rejected, time and again, the proposals for a D1-AAA (sounds absurd, huh?) There just aren't enough schools. If so many of the private schools that cut football in the 70's and 80's were still around (Xavier, Marquette, St. Louis off the top of my head), then maybe we'd be in a position to create a more meaningful championship for schools that wished to play at that level. And you'd better believe that if there were a viable D-I option for playing non-scholly football, there would be a lot of FCS schools moving to it.

 

But, as it is, that's not happening. We lost Austin Peay this year because non-scholarship football didn't have what they were looking for. I don't know how to make it any more attractive while a part of the I-AA basement. I can't deny that my interest in wanting schools to remain non-scholarship is somewhat selfish; if the PFL folds because of lack of interest, it's likely that Dayton will eliminate the football program like the other Catholic schools before us. I don't want to see this happen. There is, for whatever reason, still a faint hope that non-scholarship football will work out. It began in the early 90's as a bold new adventure and is quickly turning out to be more difficult than perhaps any of the founding schools thought it would be.

I don't want anyone to thinkt the wrong thing - as long as Morehead is playing non-scholarship football in the Pioneer League - I will still be keeping up with every game and cheering for them wholeheartedly. The team can't help the situation they are in - all they can do is win the games that are scheduled. I think they have a great stadium, a great coaching staff, and a very good non-scholarship team. I still would much rather have them in the OVC and playing with scholarship players.

I just think whatever they do that Morehead could take a little better care of thier players weather it is traveling arrangements, equipment, or scholarships, the time these kids spend for this school and the dedication they have is tremendous and they are a little exploited when it comes to the footbal program there, unless it has changed alot in the last 5 years or so.

Non scholarship play makes a lot of sense to me. This actually puts the focus back where it was originally intended - academics. My son has looked at Dayton and although it would be great to get an athletic scholarship that is not his primary interest. Getting to an academic program that will allow him a good career and reasonable earnings - after football - is the long term goal. There appears to be plenty of opportunity for academic money at Dayton, likely the same exisits at other schools.
