October 29, 200718 yr Author The Twins aren't going to add the salary of a player like Dunn, BP or Harang. It would have to be young players or prospects and maybe a Junior if the Reds eat his salary for 08...
October 29, 200718 yr Personally, I'd rather not trade Phillips, but it is flippin' Johan Santana. Best pitcher in the game IMO. See ya Brandon. I personally would like to see Griffey and Freel packaged with something else,,,,,,,I don't know,,,,,perhaps some free yacht rentals in Minnesota.
October 29, 200718 yr Keep in mind, Santana has (I think) 1 more deal and then he hits the jackpot ($20 per?), the Twins (I honestly believe) would love to deal him for a package of current and future stars. The Twins can NOT pay Morneau and Santana and Mauer what they are worth as free agents. Just can't happen.
October 29, 200718 yr To bad this deal wont happen! One of those 3 will be dealt before April of '09...that is a fact.
October 29, 200718 yr What pitcher in the right mind would want to come to Cincinnat? And pitch at the Great American Ball Park! That park is for hitters..and it always will be!
October 29, 200718 yr Author One of those 3 will be dealt before April of '09...that is a fact. And I can't see them trading the home town boy...
October 29, 200718 yr And I can't see them trading the home town boy... Agreed. :thumb: Not to mention, Canada is close to Minneapolis.
October 29, 200718 yr The Twins aren't going to add the salary of a player like Dunn, BP or Harang. It would have to be young players or prospects and maybe a Junior if the Reds eat his salary for 08... That might not be too bad. Follow my thinking. Casti has said he is going to up the salary for the Reds next season. Eating Jr.'s salary while adding Santana is ONLY FOR ONE YEAR. So you are getting a top line pitcher that arguably could lead you to the best starting pitchers for the NL in 2008 or 2009 with Santana, Harang, Arroyo, Bailey and someone else. Those starters could give you the Central Division crown. Get into the playoffs and the 3 of Santana, Harang and Arroyo with Bailey thrown in there if you don't need Santana on 3 days rest could get you through the playoffs. You get a serious WS run for the cost of Jr's salary for one year. If you could keep a offensive nucleus built around either Bruce/Hamilton, Dunn, Phillips, Votto/Handeburg. The either/or of Bruce/hamilton and Votto/Handeburg would be gone in the trade. So, would a Jr, Hamilton, Votto and as HSSB said AA and lower their choice with the Reds eating Jr's salary come close to doing it?
October 29, 200718 yr Author Agreed. :thumb: Not to mention, Canada is close to Minneapolis. So we agree that Santana will be the guy moved. Come on Wayne...
October 29, 200718 yr What pitcher in the right mind would want to come to Cincinnat? And pitch at the Great American Ball Park! That park is for hitters..and it always will be! How did Harang do there this season?
October 29, 200718 yr What pitcher in the right mind would want to come to Cincinnat? A. He would be traded here, so he would be coming whether he wanted to or not. B. If your point is he wouldn't re-sign after '08, that is a fair arugment, however, I'd assume they'd work that out before the deal. C. They said Bronson wouldn't re-sing too. I get it, Johan is 5x the pitcher Arroyo is, however, the same thing was said. D. Harang's numbers at home are quite good and he had no problem re-signing here when he certainly could have busted the bank after his deal was up. E. Kerry Wood will be in the Reds' bullpen in '08, does he count as being in his "right mind?"
October 29, 200718 yr Author How did Harang do there this season? 8-4 with a 3.41 ERA. Good pitchers do very well at GASP. Bad pitchers get torched...
October 29, 200718 yr So we agree that Santana will be the guy moved. I don't think there is any question. Morneau is going to get $14+ per. Mauer is going to be, conservatively, at $10 per. That is 1/2 their payroll right there, forget adding another $18 - 20 per for Santana. Just won't happen in Minne-ha ha.
