KHSAA changed the format, on counting games. Now Baseball is allowed to play 36 games.

 

Will this adversely affect regular season tournament play, where you could play multiple games and count as only 1 or 2. Does this affect scheduling and will more teams, look to play Varsity/JV combinations or Saturday games.

IMO, this will only affect JV schedules. I'd say, in a good year, most varsity teams are playing close to 36 anyway with tournaments. There are less JV tournaments to play in so you don't get as many games in...

What about the Varsity tournaments, where you could play multiple games and count as only 1. Now, if you play in those you must count each.

 

For example, play in 3 Tournaments and 2 games in each. That is a total of 6 games but you only had to count 3, toward your total. Now, all 6 games must be counted toward your total.

 

It's much easier to count but I'm just wondering, will affect the format and selection of tournaments, to participate in.

I don't think it will affect it that much. That's a normal 30 game schedule plus a couple of tournaments. Besides 'All A', are there very many high school tournaments that are more than 4 games? And that's if you make it that far. It will be interesting to know if some 'All A' teams are under-scheduling if they think they can make it to Applebee's...

I think several numbers were considered but since they allowed 3 tournaments, I presume they thought 2 games each and that would equal 36.

 

I believe most "All A" teams, would schedule normally and then cancel/re-schedule, if needed.

I too had heard the number was going to be 38.

 

The problem with baseball is our spring weather. If you have the weather like we had last season, getting 36/38 games in, is no problem, but if the rains come, then good luck getting in 25 games. Some of the tournaments like the LIT, Boyd County, and some others, get teams ready to play in their District and Regional Tournaments by requiring teams to go with more than just their #1 & #2. These tourneys make coaches find out if they have the depth in there pitching staffs and bullpens, plus in a lot of cases, a lot of players get more exposure to scouts etc. I also think the kids enjoy playing different teams from across the Commonwealth from time to time instead of the same teams from their areas..... Playing in these Tourneys is also a lot of fun for us fans, as it allow us to watch some of best teams/players in the state play.....

 

Sure hope they keep it at 38 and the weather is great for the greatest game in the world...

36 games is enough. To get 36 in a coach is going to have to schedule at leat 40-42 games, with rain outs will still be lucky to get 36 regular season games in. With the rule of not playing four school nights in a row it will be very hard to get 40-42 games scheduled in a eight week season.

I don't think this will change much. The old rule was 30, but many teams played a couple tournaments and ended up with 35-36 games (weather permitting). The way its counted is the only real difference now. Shouldn't see much effect, in my opinion.

I agree with this rule. It will be hard to get that many games anyway.

It is really not going to change much the old rule of counting tournaments only applied to a max of three tournaments anyway. Round robin and double elimination tournaments counted as two with a max of 4 games played, anything over four played counted extra anyway. That comes out to sic free games.

Can translate into an extra week. I really think, it's going to affect the Tournaments, which have a format of determining a winner.

 

I can see more and more, round-robin style or just playing 1-2 game formats.

Out west we already do a lot of pool play with 4 teams. That gets you 3 games and then a 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 matchup to get another game out of a tournament for a total of 4 games.

 

That is not bad and was very beneficial under the old system where those 4 games got counted as 2. Now you have to count all 4.

 

Since most of these happen on a Friday and Saturday you will lose a few games during the week which might not be such a bad thing. It will keep the kids home to be able to study more.
