Maybe I missed this one but didn't see a thread on it...

 

Not the greatest performance, but got the job done...

Brossart was totally dominated by the senior laden Dayton Greendevils on Saturday night at Newport Stadium.

 

The Mustangs were unable to stop the Dayton offense which scored on their first thee possessions of the first quarter, giving them a 21-0 bulge after twelve minutes of play.

 

Dayton tacked on an additional TD in the second period as Dayton worked on their passing game.

 

Brossart's highlights evolved around a fumble recovery in the second quarter created by a Chris Bowman hit and recovery by Tyler Verst, and the passing of Mustang QB Jake Heil. His line gave him plenty of time to throw (for the most part) and Heil had a nice series of completions.

 

Dayton will graduate seventeen seniors from their ranks this coming spring and the Brossart Mustangs will have another year of experience under their belts when they revist the '08 Greendevils at Davis Field next season.

Is Brossart ready for varsity games this season?

What I didn't understand, and maybe it was just about the learning curve or something, but on 3rd and 14, they(Brossart) threw a 5 yard out. Now, I'm no genius, but... I don't think that often will cut it.

 

Now I understand that that down and distance is difficult for any team, but throw a screen or something... I would say run a draw, but frankly, Dayton's LB corps, particularly led by some nasty hits from Searcy tonight, had those modest running lanes closed just as quick as they opened, that is, if they ever did open.

 

Oh, and just for the record, if you get the chance to watch Dayton play, look for #20. The kid is one of the best playmakers on the team, but he throws some vicious crackbacks on downfield blocks. Fun to watch.

Is Brossart ready for varsity games this season?

Obviously not.

 

We had played only one year of JV ball before jumping into varsity competition this year.

 

The motivation for going into varsity competition this year was the realignment of the districts, which might not happen again for several years.

 

So, rightly or wrongly the Mustangs jumped into varsity competition rather than continue to play JV ball or become an independent.

 

Our numbers are good with 46 players in the program, up from the 26 that formed the inaugural JV team last year. We compete at the varsity and at the JV level this year.

 

Our biggest detriment is the lack of players with football playing experience. Wheels are turning to institute a Junior High team comprising players from each of our five feeder grade schools.

 

Brossart has a fine history of excellence in all of our athletic endeavors. It wasn't always like that - it took years and years to build some of our programs into championship caliber teams. Football is no exception.

 

Given time we will become a highly competitive representative football program as well. Right now we will just have to SUFFER through our growing pains.

Way to go Greendevil's, way back in 1967, I remember coming down from eastern Ky, a young soph. tight end, walking into your stadium, seeing your state championships, hung on press box, there was 8 team's running offense on field, and kicker's doing there thing, and 1 of the most physical games I was ever played in, you just wore us out, well any way, this yrs. team remind's me of that 1967 team, do they have #'s of player's and depth like that team? Obvious this question is for a greybeard from Covington. I hope they beat Beechwood in the playoffs, and make a run, deep into the playoffs.

Did Dayton put the 2nd team in at all? 56-0 seems like over kill. I'm happy that the Greendevils are winning but lets not forget not to long ago we(Devils) were on the otherside...

Is there a possibility that Brossart will be placed 2A after next year?

 

I know they are one of the largest 1A schools and by my calculations there are 43 1A schools and only 33 2A currently. That happened because there are 1A schools who chose not to compete in a district and the state playoffs.

 

Add in Walton Verona which starts play next year and that makes 44. If any of the schools currently not playing in districts decides to compete in a district after next year that basically forces a team to get bumped to 2A. I'm guessing here but I would expect some schools that found they could not be competitive in a district in the 4 class system may find that they can in the 6 class system (mainly because you only have 3 or 4 district games) and jump back into class 1A.

 

Of course there are other things like consolidations, new schools opening, new teams, dropped teams, etc. that will effect the total numbers of teams and thus the division of teams into classes.

No offense to Brossart, but if you think 56-0 is overkill, you haven't seen them play. Dayton scored 8 TD's. All but one was rushing. It was only 28-0 at the half. The first teamers may have played two series into the second half before a majority of them were pulled. I say a majority, and not all, because Dayton doesn't have great numbers and sometimes didn't have enough to bring out everyone. For instance, Dayton uses 3 backs regularly, they only have 5 on the roster, and one was out with a concussion. The fourth guy scored the last TD of the game. Don't slight Dayton's young guys either. Their "freshman/sophmore" team is 5-2 with about 12 guys...

I'd guess they are in the 180-185 boys range, which would put at least ten schools ahead of them in class A, and another 4-5 in that 180 range, including Beechwood who many thought would make the move to 2A originally. Doubtful there would be enough movement to cause a boost to 2A for several years, although I'd expect them to upgrade their non-district schedule once they can field a competitive team. "Playing the best to be the best" has worked for them in their other sports!!

I'm not sure either because the state doesn't list the male enrollment. For Track purposes there are only 5 schools listed larger than Brossart and Beechwood is significantly behind Brossart. Which means if 1A and 2A both go to 37-38 teams they would be right on the bubble. But that is using co-ed data.

 

Their schedule is fine for now. The district games will always be difficult.
