October 16, 200719 yr I do let me emotions come in to what facts I use, although in a one game scenario against the right big time team Hawaii could have a chance but I just feel more likely than not Hawaii would get demolished by the big time schools.
October 16, 200719 yr Author You might not want them in a big bowl, but if they are 12-0, they deserve to be. And I wouldn't be one bit surprised if they beat one of the "good ol' boys" so many of you long to see on New Years Day. Two problems I have: 1. Being undefeated by playing the weakest schedule in D1 tells me nothing about a team deserving a BCS bid. 2. Just because a team CAN beat a supposedly better team does not justify their inclusion into a BCS bowl. If so, we'd invite Appy St . There are 50 teams that COULD win bowl games that do not deserve a bid.
October 16, 200719 yr Author What's ironic is that people beg for a system that allows the "little guys" to be a given a chance to compete (Playoff), but then complains when the little guys run the table (Hawaii) and go to a big bowl game, saying they aren't good enough. Who is arguing for the little guys? They're little for a reason. Should they step up and play the big boys and be successful, they're in.
October 16, 200719 yr Author I wouldn't call it a crutch. No one is taking it easier on them. It's just a better way of explaining why Hawaii might not be winning by huge margins; doesn't make them less of a good team. Hawaii's backup came in and put up 60 points on a team. What does that say about their level of competition?
October 16, 200719 yr With all that has been said, I will give my opinion now. IF Hawaii goes undefeated and wins the WAC and they are the only undefeated team in football they should get a BCS bid. At the end of the day all that really matters is wins. If I am not mistaken the most prevelant ranking by the BCS committee/computer is wins. I agree that UH probably wouldn't beat USF in a neutral game but they should get the chance. I am not necessarily saying that if UH is undefeated they should be in the Championship game. What I am saying is that if every other major program has a loss and UH doesn't they deserve a BCS game. Do I like it? NO is it fair and just? yes About the scheduling issue: Nobody will schedule UH because it is so far away and UH won't schedule a good BCS team because NOBODY (except a few exceptions) wants to play the Florida, LSU, USC, and Notre Dame's on the road, because you are asking for a loss, usually. I hope some of that made sense
October 16, 200719 yr As far as scheduling goes didn't Alabama play there three years in a row when they were on bowl ban . Sounds like a plan to me for a major school on probation always make your last game at Hawaii.
October 16, 200719 yr As far as scheduling goes didn't Alabama play there three years in a row when they were on bowl ban . Sounds like a plan to me for a major school on probation always make your last game at Hawaii. It was 2003 and Hawaii won, 37-29. Seems like I remember Alabama's coach (Shula, I guess) saying that they were treating their Hawaii game like a bowl! It does seem like the NCAA hands out a trip to play Hawaii along with probation! I guess we should also mention that Hawaii did make a return trip to Tuscaloosa to open last season and were defeated 25-17.
October 16, 200719 yr 1. Being undefeated by playing the weakest schedule in D1 tells me nothing about a team deserving a BCS bid. Boise's schedule was rated 78th last year. Without the benefit of hindsight, how do we know they deserved a bid? 2. Just because a team CAN beat a supposedly better team does not justify their inclusion into a BCS bowl. If so, we'd invite Appy St . 1. Appalachian State is ineligible - Hawaii is not. 2. Appalachian State lost a regular season game - If Hawaii loses a game, they'll be removed from consideration as well. 3. If their schedule doesn't suit selectors, how do we know they can't beat a better team? Should we not give them a shot?
October 16, 200719 yr Who is arguing for the little guys? They're little for a reason. For the most part, they're little because the "big conference" won't let them be big. We don't have to get into who makes the BCS rules - at least the original rules. I'm sure "power conference" officials are already regretting including the so-called "little guys" - although they are 2-0 in BCS bowl games. Should they step up and play the big boys and be successful, they're in. Tell me who in BCS football is answering the phone to play Hawaii this season? Everyone knew Hawaii would be a very good team. If they come to your place and beat you, you're in trouble. If you go to the islands and lose, it was expected. No big boy is going to take that chance.
October 16, 200719 yr Hawaii's backup came in and put up 60 points on a team. What does that say about their level of competition? If Mike Hartline plays in place of Andre Woodson on Saturday and leads Kentucky to a 56-28 win over Florida, Mel Kiper will list him as the #1 sophomore in the country. If Hawaii's backup quarterback does it, we knock their competition. Why the double standard?

If Hawaii's backup quarterback does it, we knock their competition. Why the double standard? Simply put Hawaii's QB didn't do it against Florida, if he did it against a team like Florida I don't think anyone would doubt him.

October 16, 200719 yr While I agree that, in a conference like the SEC, Hawaii couldnt compete week in and week out. However, in defense of those young men playing at Hawaii, they are doing everything that is asked of them. If they go undefeated, I dont know how you stop them from a BCS bowl game. And, as I said earlier, they would have a problem competing every week in a conference like the SEC, but a bowl game is ONE game, and, as we all know, anything can happen on a given saturday. Just ask Appy State.
