September 21, 200719 yr Definitely the case...Unless we are meeting in a tournament or invited for a scrimmage there are just not any private schools in our area that we historically schedule. You could look at most of the schools in the 31st district and others and think it was a boycott but I just do not see the privates adding us to their schedule for proximity reasons alone. There is plenty of competition much closer to home. So you are not "cowering from competition?":D
September 21, 200719 yr The what's the point of specifically saying that you (meaning a school) won't play private schools? It seems to me that if there aren't private schools in your (meaning a school) area, there would be no reason to make such a point, unless you were trying to make a point.
September 21, 200719 yr What is weak? Sticky has held the position that boycotting the privates is weak and shouldn't be done. I assume that Owen County taking this position is what he is meaning.
September 21, 200719 yr Again, I take the stance that schools have a right to schedule whom they want. And the reasons vary: because of level of competition (including HS's who refuse to schedule teams that are below the level of competition they want to play), don't like the atmosphere playing at their place, don't like the coach, not in their conference, region, district, too far to drive, etc, etc And again I take the stance that I have the right to describe them as I want and cowards fits my bill although I could accept whiners as well.
September 21, 200719 yr So you are not "cowering from competition?":D Nah..we do not mind getting beat..we see enough of that in our own region. However, I believe they are not beating our doors down to schedule us so maybe they are cowering
September 21, 200719 yr And again I take the stance that I have the right to describe them as I want and cowards fits my bill although I could accept whiners as well. So it is well within the right of Wilson Sears to call the privates cheaters if you call the publics cowards and whiners? I think neither serves any purposes in addressing and solving this issue but rather goes further to a split.
September 21, 200719 yr What is weak? The argument that private schools have an advantage and, because of this, we're not going to play them. YES, everyone reserves the right to schedule who they would like and who they think will make their program better BUT, when you put the 'private school ban' on the table it makes you look weak, IMO. Iknow, it makes no sense for Silver Grove to schedule CovCath in basketball, I get that. But a private school boycott would keep them from playing Calvary, Heritage, Villa...etc. Teams they should be playing... I'm just tired of typing the same thing over and over again about how these schools are going to play inferior competition throughout the year so the private schools can thump them in the post-season. It's counter-productive to their programs and they use it as a crutch. I couldn't imagine as a coach telling your kids, directly or indirectly, that you don't think they're capable of playing and competing with other kids their age. Regardless of where they're from or how they got there, they ARE high school kids... Thanks G...:irked:

I think neither serves any purposes in addressing and solving this issue but rather goes further to a split. He can say it and I and other can disagree with it. That's the beauty of America. And FWIW I really doubt that a few comments on a message board will have any real effect on "this issue", while comments by Sears in a newspaper can have a real impact.

O I firmly believe that more of the everyday citizens discussing this get more information about this debate on BGP than they do reading it in a newspaper.

Owen County needs to do what is best for the kids at Owen County. I do not pretend to know why or if this is true..but I am sure that there was a good reason for the decision. Fielding a team in a program that has little or no success is very difficult and no fun for the kids either. I do respect what you are saying and by not playing the better competition they may suffer some, but let's face it most of these rural schools are not going to stand a chance against the large Privates or the large publics anyway.

I could imagine a coach telling their kids that they aren't going to schedule a school that cheats RATHER than say we can't compete with them. Although they might say that they can't compete with them because they cheat to get that good.

That's my point, kind of. Some rural schools shouldn't schedule the Trinity, St. X and LexCath's of the world if they are a much smaller school and can't compete with them. However, it's not a size/private school boycott. It's strictly a private school boycott. That rural school* should be able to compete with the St. Henry, Cov. Holy Cross and NewCath's of the world. *Not necessarily Owen Co. because like you, I don't know there situation. I'm using NKY as an example...

September 21, 200719 yr I couldn't be that naive to my kids either... But don't you agree that is the way the coach is going to sell it to the kids. And some parents will take it hook, line and sinker. Because they are looking for a reason, real or imagined, Little Johnny is getting thumped by cardigan wearing Stuart. I still think classification should be more on the lines of size and rural/urban.
