As we approach the midway point of the high school football regular season, there are some incredible numbers being put up by players across the state.

· Tates Creek running back Ty Sparks rushed for a school-record 403 yards on 45 carries, scoring on runs of 47 and one yard. Sparks’ Herculean effort on the ground wasn’t enough for the Creekers to beat Madison Central, who improved to 4-0 with the 27-21 win.

· Fulton County’s LaDrekus Moffat rushed for 301 yards and four touchdowns as the Pilots beat Ballard Memorial 45-30. Moffat also had ten tackles and a sack on defense.

· Marquis Buckner of Western rushed for 326 yards and four touchdowns on just 17 carries as the Warriors destroyed Atherton 60-0. Buckner scored on runs of 3, 34, 55, and 2 yards and recorded 11 tackles on defense. Devin High added 101 yards on three carries as part of the 461-yard Western rushing attack.

· Will Stein had a big night, but it wasn’t enough for Trinity to beat nationally-ranked Cincinnati St. Xavier. Stein completed 23-of-43 passes for 375 yards and three scores as the Shamrocks built a 24-13 third quarter lead on the road. But the Bombers scored 28 straight points to end Trinity’s 16-game winning streak. Alex Dutton was a beneficiary of Stein’s big night, catching 11 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns.

· After Trinity saw their win streak end, the second-longest streak ended when Daviess County lost for the first time in six games dating back to last year. Owensboro beat the Panthers 31-7.

· Pike County Central quarterback Aaron McGuire threw for 246 yards and rushed for three touchdowns as the Hawks won their third straight game, 33-14 over Boyd County.

· Woodford County quarterback Steven Duckworth completed 24-of-35 passes for 238 yards and four touchdowns as the Yellowjackets beat Bryan Station 31-19.

· Scotty Mayes rushed for 82 yards and scored four times as Trigg County beat Murray for the first time in 11 years 49-6. It was Trigg’s largest margin of victory over Murray in 51 meetings dating back to 1939.

· Pendleton County junior Ryan Stegman rushed for 133 yards and four scores as the Wildcats beat Henry County 33-26.

· Hopkinsville and Madisonville have met 102 times in the past 100 years. Madisonville’s 29-15 win over the Tigers Friday was only their second in the last 25 meetings. Hopkinsville still leads the all-time series 64-34-4.

· Domonique Hayden rushed for 116 yards and caught three passes for 53 yards to help Lexington Christian beat Lloyd Memorial 52-32. Eagles quarterback Lucas Witt threw for 154 yards and ran for 141 yards and two touchdowns.

· Southwestern outgained Lincoln County 395-342 but Lincoln won the scoring battle 49-24. Avery Spicer ran for 133 yards, and Dustin Brummett added 132 yards and three scores to overcome a 293-yard passing night from Warrior quarterback T.T. Wooldrige.

· It’s hard to score when you don’t have the football. Larue County found that out the hard way, as Glasgow owned the football for 34:30 of the 48 minutes possible in the Scotties’ 21-6 win. Lamar Howard, Blake Perkins, and Corey Witcher combined for 46 carries and 191 yards on the ground as Glasgow continually pounded away at Larue. It didn’t help the Hawks when they lost quarterback Alan Vass and receiver Aaron Mayfield to concussions and running back Travis Hayes to an ankle injury.

· Speaking of Glasgow, they are one of four unbeaten teams remaining in Class 2A. However, three of the teams are in the same district. Glasgow (4-0) plays at Green County (4-0) this week, while Metcalfe County (4-0) hosts Monroe County. The other 2A unbeaten is Trigg County (4-0), who plays at Reidland this week.

Five games to keep an eye on this week::

· Calloway County vs. Lone Oak – Lone Oak has roared to a 3-0 behind the passing of quarterback Corey Robinson, who has thrown for 1,140 yards and 21 touchdowns in three games. They will face a Calloway County team that averages 230 yards on the ground. The winner will have the inside track at the top seed in Class 4A, District 1.

· Christian County vs. Hopkinsville – These two cross-town rivals hook up for the 39th time Friday, with Hopkinsville leading the all-time series 21-17. Christian County is looking to win their third straight game over Hoptown for the first time in 15 years.

· Manual vs. St. Xavier – Two of the top three ranked teams in Class 6A square off at historic Manual Stadium Friday in a game that should determine the top seed in the playoffs. It’s the 79th time the schools have met, with St. X holding a 46-30-2 all-time lead. The Tigers have won 15 straight games over the Crimsons dating back to 1993.

· Henry Clay vs. Lafayette – Two of the state’s top quarterbacks hook up in the Battle of Lexington Friday. Henry Clay’s Ryan Phillipi has combined to rush and throw for over 1,000 yards and score 12 touchdowns, while Lafayette’s Logan Bunch has thrown for 598 yards and four touchdowns.

· Green County vs. Glasgow – These two unbeaten teams are among the most improved in Class 2A. Green County last started a season 5-0 back in 2000 when they won their first 12 before losing to Corbin in the 2A playoffs. Glasgow hasn’t started a season 5-0 in the past decade.

Monte Merrick kicked a 56-yard field goal – the third-longest in school history – as Bell County shut out Rockcastle County 24-0. Spencer Greer added 107 yards on the ground for the unbeaten Bobcats.

This kick was huge momentum swing as it came with 3 seconds before half with Bell only ahead 7-0. A correction, I believe, It was the longest in school history, and the third longest in Kentucky High School history. 58 is the record by Pettrey of Raceland; that kick and the 57 yard FG by Dustin Wynn (Middlesboro) tied by Shane Popham last season, were the only longer field goals.

No Rockcastle, Corbin, Knox Central or Bell County mention, I am upset. :D

There is a paragraph about Merrick's field goal...followed by a comment by the Rock/Bell game.

It should have said state history. I fixed it. Thanks.

I think Virginia strategically picks which Kentucky teams they play, and usually picks the smaller KY schools to play their larger schools. I'm not sure which teams have played VA teams, but they've historically been Class A border schools who have been enticed to cross the border to play their larger schools. :thumb:
