Metcalfe County 14 Somerset 7

Featured Replies

Final, per the scoreboard. I would be interested in highlights from this one, this score seems shockingly low to me.

Somersets "D" must have improved a great deal this week.

It would be nice if they could get the O and D working together.

Yeah but where did their offense go?

Metcalfe typically plays that ball control, field position type game and can lull you asleep with it, but, its been very effective the past few years..They play that bend but dont break defense, rarely giving up the big play and are fundamentaly a good tackling team.. To beat them, you have to take the ball right at them and overpower them. They usually aren't a real deep team and you can get to them in the latter parts of the game.

Somerset so far this season has been alot like the stock market...up...down...up...way down... If they hope to have any chance in the Eastern half of 3A with teams like Belfry, Sheldon Clark, Russell, Mason County, and Breathitt... they had better start finding some consistency on both side sof the ball.

Still VERY early though, and Coach Cobb knows what he is doing.

Jumpers O didn't get going until the last five minutes, they scored and then recovered a fumble with less than a minute to go. Game ended on about a 20 yard pass being broke up in the endzone by the Metcalfe D. Metcalfe QB was silly accurate on short and midrange passes all night. Somerset had a least one TD called back on a penalty.

Kudos to Metcalfe, tough hard hitting fundemental team. By the way GREAT facility, thank you for your gracious hospitality.

Metcalfe's defense has been pretty solid the last 3-4 years.

Metcalfe County is solid and stayed true to their MO. They ran the ball and threw some short, safe passes. It didn't put a lot of points on the board but it kept Somerset's offense off the field. Very rarely did the Hornets go 3 and out. They seemed to always pick up a first down or two and win the field position battle. Somerset has a rhythm offense and didn't find themselves to the fourth quarter. It seemed like everytime they would get something going in the first 3 quarters they would have a busted play, give up a sack or commit a penalty and have to punt the ball. The Jumpers moved the ball well in the fourth quarter. They had one drive die at the 15 yard line after a sack. They finally scored with a little less than 3 minutes to go and after a Metcalfe fumble drove down to the 17 but only had time for one play before time expired. On a good note for the Jumpers they seemed to still have plenty left in the fourth quarter and played better defense on the ends. If their defense improves as much between now and next week as it did between last week and this week they'll be okay.

JumperDad, how did the young o line play?

They were only okay. They gave up a few sacks but overall they weren't too bad.

like I have said before, it is going to be a long season for the jumpers, but I wish them luck

This loss won't look nearly as bad as you think by the end of the year. Somerset should do no worse than 6-4 and really should finish the regular season at 7-3. On a side note, this is my 2500th post--I just made All-American!

How many carries did Hughes/Shoemaker get? I didn't see the game and picked it up late in the 4th and from the radio it sounded like Somerset was throwing 3 out of 4 downs. Every time the Jumpers came to the line Berlew was saying Hall in the Gun. Which I understand. So I am wondering how many Carries the 2 big boys got.
