August 25, 200719 yr I don't know myself, but the race is getting interesting after everyone wrote the gov off. Will gambling be a big issue in the election???
August 25, 200719 yr Here are my thoughts from the other thread. His initial stance 'personally against it, won't oppose a vote' was the perfect political stance. It left him plenty of latitude to attack the values associated with casino gaming, attack Beshear for being in the pocket of casinos, banking the economy on a very inflated revenue figure, et al, as well as retain those Republicans who are probably flirting with a Beshear vote because they would like to see gambling. As an incumbent governor who has garnered the stigma of being unethical with the merit hiring indictments, he’s going to fight an uphill battle in that department, so attacking the immorality of gambling is not going to win him terribly much outside of evangelicals. One thing he has done well has been his fiscal restraint and the economy seems to be humming along smoothly in the state. I think NKY has been especially pleased with the money they have received, which is a stark contrast to the amount they received under Patton. But, I think NKY, as a whole, want casinos and are mellowed out in their zeal for re-electing him with his incessant anti-casino message. I feel his campaign would be much better served lauding the economy, pointing to the fiscal irresponsibility of banking all economic results on $500 million income from casinos, while still being able to speak of the ills of gaming to staunch, anti-casino conservatives and simultaneously assure pro-gaming Republicans that he won’t hinder a referendum on the issue.
August 27, 200719 yr Not with Bunning contradicting Fletcher's stance . Bunning's view has no bearing on my thoughts about gambling. Fletcher's stance will support my choice of voting for him.
August 27, 200719 yr No. It will hurt him. The prospect of choosing between Fletcher and Beshear is terrible. I hoped that, after being ignored by the voters for a long time, Beshear would quietly disappear. Sadly, he will probably, by default, be the next governor. There is no justice on this earth. By the way, Fletcher is no better. Where is A.B. Chandler when you need him?
August 27, 200719 yr I think Jim Bunning's stance on anything at this point can be filed under "largely irrelevant."
August 27, 200719 yr Here's my question: How can one be against gambling, yet support horse-racing? One is the sport of kings, the other is the sport of trailer parks.
August 27, 200719 yr One is the sport of kings, the other is the sport of trailer parks. What a stereotype !! , and I guess if we ever get casinos in Kentucky shoes won't be required .
August 27, 200719 yr What a stereotype !! , and I guess if we ever get casinos in Kentucky shoes won't be required .You couldn't be more wrong! Tank tops, cutoffs and flip-flops will be the standard. We don't want our customers stepping in tabbacy juice barefooted.
August 27, 200719 yr I think Jim Bunning's stance on anything at this point can be filed under "largely irrelevant." Sounds like the Fletcher camp does not appreciate Senator Bunning's opinions a whole lot .
August 27, 200719 yr Sounds like the Fletcher camp does not appreciate Senator Bunning opinions a whole lot .I think most people are realizing that Bunning should have retired.
