Where does everyone get that Coal Grove is a below average team in Ohio? Yes they have some bad years but this year they have 16 starters back from a team that went 6-4 and they have a very good coach in Dave Lucas who coached Coal Grove back in the 80's when they were good, then he left for Buffalo(Wayne), WV and won a state title there in Class AA in the 90's.

LC may or may not win but they will not be blown out by Belfry. This game will be no different than any other LC/Belfry game "A tough hard fought game".

I cannot go against my Dawgs:

Lawrence County 24

Belfry 22

Coal Grove is and has been a below average team for quite some time. I'm quite familiar with Ohio Football....and they've never really been on the map. Yes..they've had a good team here and there...but Coal Grove is a pure afterthought in the Ohio HS football landscape. Plain and simple.

Lets here some more about Lawrence Co. What kind of stats did the Lawrence passing game rack up in their opener? Who are the explosive players for the Bulldogs? Were they able to break big plays? How big and effective is County up front?

Yes overall in OHIO, but that alot of times is better than alot of KY football.

Coal Grove Dawson-Bryant - 1996, 1992, 1990, 1989, 1986, 1983, 1981

These are the years that they have made the playoffs. 7 times I guess is not on the map.

I dont know much about Ohio football except for some of the bigger schools, but aren't they kind of like lets say a Paintsville, normally dont beat the big teams but usualy pretty decent for their class?

The biggest difference in this year's team then the last 2 or 3 year's is that this team can score quick seems in the past LC would have to get the lead and try to hang on . We wasn't a come from behind team at all . But after what I saw last Friday night this team can put points on the board from any were on the field the kids are starting to get there confidence up about the new O and I will say that if they don't get beat down psychically and mentally by mid season you will see a real good ball club coming out of Louisa. And it's not all passing the run game is there also it just needs to jell a little bit more . Good luck Dawgs come Friday night and enjoy the atmosphere at the Cam it's a wonderful place to play a football game.:jump:

Was the QB accurate? Did the chains move?

Looking at it long term, 7 playoffs in the last 25 seasons.... that's alright but by no means does it make them a traditional solid team. Out of thsoe years how many times did they win their opening round game?

Now looking at it short term, which is always the best way to look at it.... it has been 10 years since they have made the playoffs. Compare them to an Ironton? Portsmouth? Wheelersburg? Teams which have played Kentucky schools over the years frequently from southern ohio....

They may be on the map, but their dot on the map is the same as my hometown of Hardy... very small. HAHA

LoL at that last line EKU.

How to Pirate fans expect to see the running back situation change this week? I for one felt May looked very good from the TB spot.

How does Heath Varney factor in?

Now one thing I was thinking about today was what would it take for Belfry to lose this game? And surprisingly alot came to mind. Just lookign at this thing on paper, even LC fans must admit that Belfry is a clear favorite. The Pirates are a more experienced team from a team that went to the state semi-finals the year before, more athletic and deep across the board at the skill positons, and enjoying homefield advantage. YET, here are soeme asy ways for LC to stay even and win this game:

1. O-LINE-Belfry absolutely whipped the Corbin boys up front. But, the biggest question amrk going intot he regular season for Belfry was their o-line, and even Coach Haywood commented in the News-Express how he was surprised with the way the o-line played.. maybe Corbin's defensive Front 7 just wasn't very good? I mean just looking at them they returned nearly evey starter from last year, but last year this defensive unit got absolutely scorched for 60+ points aganst Middlesboro, and in their last game against Russell the Devils added 30+ points as well. If the Pirate's linemen get the false pretense that they have already proven themselevs then LC, who traditionally uses a 4-3 defense against Belfry and has pretty good success, could very easily surprise the Pirates.

2. FUMBLES- Let us not forget that belfry fumbled the ball 3 times vs. Corbin, all of which were lost. Let us also not forget that in the Hazard scrimmage Belfry looked absolutely horrible with the Center-QB exchange, and last week it looked flawless. Fumbles deep in our own territory is the easiest way to give the Bulldogs a mulligan against this defense. LC fans may resent me saying this, but I have watched ALOT of football and will call a spade a spade. THERE IS NO WAY LC CAN BEAT BELFRY THIS YEAR BY DRIVING THE FOOTBALL TIME AFTER TIME. In order for LC to score against Belfry they will need either a short field or big plays.. fumbles provide the short field and the momentum swing to go for the big play, these are definately possible.

3. OVER SUBSTITUTING- Haywood was quoted in the News-Express saying that Belfry will continue to use the multiple halfback clusters all season. LC fans if you haven't watched Belfry, the Pirates actually utilize 6 different running backs... no lie. The clear advnatges is that Belfry gives you multiple looks and all the runners have distinct styles, game planning for all 6 is nearly impossible. BUT, this also present definite pitfalls. What if LC builds momentum and the rotation at the time plays into the Bulldog's advanatge froma personnel standpoint defensively? The numerus backs also puts a strain on the handoff exchange which increases the likelihood of said fumbles.

I am a noted Pirate pessimist... I always have to see the engative side I guess... I'll just put it this way.. if Belfry plays a flawless game they will take care of business with ease, but anything less than flawless and the Bulldogs (who happen to be evry hungry to get that win that helps prove to fans they are BACK) have a legitimate shot in this one.

How does Heath Varney factor in?

Heath was the projected starter at HB throughout practice and scrimmages until just right before the Corbin game.. he will find his faior share of PT along with the rest of Belfry's "stable".

Haywood said in today News-Express article recapping the game, that he planned to sue the multiple rotations throughout the season.

My personal favorite groupings were:

1. Dotson FB, May-HB, Lee-HB... I liek to call this the "Hillbilly Deluxe" backfield cause it is big, powerful, and looks the best HAHA

2. May-FB, Lee-HB, Hickman-HB.... this one maximizes your tackle breaking potential and gives Hickman two monsters to lead block. it also is a very evrstaile backfield with the type of playcalling you can do.

I like both of those backfields the best as well.

Thanks for validating my point.

May did look very good from the TB spot. However, give Corbin's D-Line some props....they did a very nice job containing the fullback for much of the night. I have to think we'll see more of the FB in weeks to come.

In all the years I've been associated with BHS...I can't remember when we've had so much talent across the board in the backfield. Now...with that being said....I certainly don't see a Doug Howard, David Jones or even a Matt Maynard back there....someone with breakaway speed that we came so accustomed to.

But the stable is extremely full. Timmy Lovern and Thomas Varney both look very promising as soph's.
