Dayton will beat a lot of teams and WILL play with Beechwood. Holmes will be fine. Fix some things on special teams and unnecessary penalties and everything will be fine. Remember, it's a marathon, not a sprint.

Congrats to Coach Deaton and the footballers from DAYTON! Coach Deaton had a great guy watching over him during the game... his father Reno, a terrific highschool football supporter and fan, sadly passed away earlier this year.

 

Congrats Coach Deaton... there will be many more V's to come in your future.

The game was actually very sketchy... i don't think either team played to their potential... but it made for a great game...

 

the special teams were the game.... if you include kicks, punts, returns, botched snaps, and obviosly the fire call at the end, that was it... and Dayton got the last chance at it... somebody tell those punters to put the ball to the boundary away from the return men...

 

I didn't think Coach Lickert went with the counter play near as much as he did at Dayton, and instead it seemed like he went a whole lot more to the outside zone/stretch plays to move the ball to the outside...probably trying to utilize that speed.... Its clear that he wants to put the offensive game in the hands of James Miller, as many times when Miller would rollout for that sprintout pass giving him the run pass option, I couldn't help but see a picture in my mind of certain number 12 in green doing the same things many times in the past 3 or 4 years...

 

The pass games definately need some work, but they are fixable problems. In the run game, you could clealy see a difference in the mentality of the runners. Holmes runners, while not shying away from the contact seemed to want to get to open field at the easiest route, while Dayton's back, Brummett in particular, and Richardson on that short TD, not only did, but it seemed wanted to sometimes, run through tacklers....

 

the little #86 WR, Turner I believe, was the unsung hero of the game... yeah, the play that everyone notices is that fade TD from 15 out with the game on the line, but how 'bout all that return yardage on KO's...

 

I was pretty impressed with Dayton's Defense, as they consistantly gave field position at or near the 50 but still held a majority of the time... and of course the three big stops between the minute left and the forty some odd seconds left on the clock when they forced the punt were huge....

 

I've seen Brummett play a lot since he broke into the Varsity games a couple years ago and this possibly could have been his best HS game, offensively going through people and pounding out the yardage, and defensively just being aroung the ball all the time and making a play, when a play was to be made...on a quick side not the Richardson kid impressed me... I didn't think he would make quite an impact but he seemed to always be around the ball on D...

 

I think that the Holmes run game improvised a whole lot more than the Dayton run game... It seemed like when they wanted too, Dayton's line opened holes at will, knocking out 4, 5, and 6 yard gains, but then would have a couple mental lapses, Holmes big run yardage looked like it came through putting moves on a slipping tackles... Holmes pass rush was pretty consistant of being right there and putting pressure on the QB, but I don't think got there too much. Obviously, it was still effective...

 

I can't say some of the playcalling early in the fourth didn't make me scratch my head a bit... particularly one moment when the Devils were at about their own 40 and needed a consistant drive. To start the drive they went incomplete pass, ok, not good but you can make up for it, but then on second down they went deep and overthrew... I think it might have been one of the Holmes picks. It just seems to me that you have to do something to be sure to get some postive yardage on that play to not put yourself in a hole on 3rd down and give yourself a chance to pick up the first and continue the drive...

 

Young's return, at that point in the game, was clutch to say the least. If you didn't see it, he took it off a one hop and made a couple guys miss before his wall on the sideline formed and if you ever have seen this kid run, you know in the open field he can fly. What was impressive to me is that one Dayton blocker broke off the back end of the wall to give him a "lead" past the last couple defenders. Obviously, eventually Young broke away and crossed field looking for the corner of the endzone but was caught by a good pursuit angle... It was a heckuva return all the way around, with the blocking and all, but I am of the opinion that the ability to return is one of those things that you just can't teach with that elusiveness, vision, cutting ability... they need to find a way to put the ball in his hands more often because the kid makes things happen... tough kid too... same one that was sitting out couple weeks ago with a bum shoulder...

 

Great game to watch... Dayton's got a lot of talent, and as stated, I don't think this was near their best game... and Holmes... don't read the papers or listen to what everyone is saying. You have a bright season ahead of you, as long as you think you do... and for each team, it helps that you both have 2 great coaches to lead you...

congrats to Dayton and Holmes on the return game, if there was nothing else there was that! Poor execution from both of these teams. But a win is a win amd that all that counts.

but you have to believe, after watching it a few times, somewhere sitting all alone and by himself... while watching Young return that ball up the sideline and seeing that fade being caught in the endzone or watching that last fire call and seeing one of "his guys" bully his way into the endzone, you have to think somewhere, Lickert smiled, and a part of him cheered...

Young is a great player and I heard Early in the fourth quarter he had dislocated his "good" shoulder only to return two plays later.

Brian will be fine... he made some bad choices, but i think he was put in some bad spots too... and it didn't help that every time the ball went off a receivers hands, it didn't go to the ground like it is supposed to... note to aspiring receivers, if it hits your hands, either catch it, or make sure no one does...

 

you can't give up on your QB after one game... he performed very well last year in spot duty and has been working extremely hard... so he didn't have the game he hoped for... there are a lot more...

I just dont see it. I dont see anyone in our district in 1A playing with Beechwood this year....
