Newport/Conner Scrimmage

Featured Replies

Newport 27 Conner 21

Great Job to both teams!

.

Newport dominated most of this game - it only got close due to turnovers. Conner is a much better team than they showed tonight - they have two weeks to get ready for Johnson Central - they will need to utilize all the practice time they have to get a new defensive scheme ready.

Once again Conner did not wear numbers - is coaching staff fearful of what the scouts may see?

Lots of teams wear their practice jerseys in scrimmages.

Practice jerseys, very common like CSHS81 said.

They did get dominated!!

Conner scored on their opening drive. It looked like it made Newport angry and they responded by pounding Conner, physically beating them at the line of scrimmage. Then would do some waggles and counter traps to mix it up. Conner seemed to back down after Newport started "busting them in the mouth."

The only bright spots for Conner were their tailback Engelmon, and the offense when they went to the shotgun and spread them out. The ony complaint for me was they only did 2 different sets of patterns for the receivers. But it was effective.

Conners d needs to step up if they are to content this year..

It is very rare to see a team doing more than a base series of offensive play during scrimmage. Even the ones you see are not all of their bread and butter plays. If the vanilla was working then that is a good thing.

It's early, the D will come around. The O is the thing to pay attention to, and not points off of miscues but points off of execution.

Case in point, Dixie scored 34 on O and the O also gave up 12 due to turnovers. The D only actually is responsible for 7 points. That is a good defensive night and an OK Offensive night. Were any of Newports points due to Conners O or were they long sustained drives? Just curious.

I saw Newport earlier this week against Ludlow and they struggled a bit. How did they do in the passing game tonight? They have a good ground game but they cant just give it to Wilfong every play. They are going to have to develope some sort of passing game to keep defenses honest. Their pass defense needs a lot of work also.

Good to hear they played better tonight.

The teams playing NKY scrimmages in the TP Classic have been encouraged, but not required, to wear game numbers since it cost $5 to get in.

I think it is a good idea. No one is going to gain an advantage but not wearing numbers.

Sounds like Coach Hyder and the Wildcats are ready to make a run at this competitive 2A district! What did Oden look like in the scrimmage? I thought he showed a lot of promise last year as a Sophomore and he definitely makes a good 1-2 Punch with Wilfong....

By the way, who do I send my $5 to? There was no fee /no one taking gate money at the game - TPC lost out, as there was a decent crowd for the game.

I dont know any thing about Conner but the Cats looked very good I think they might surprise some teams, they have a deffense that swarms to the ball and they will hit ya when they get there! the offense looked good they can move the ball on the ground an it look like they still have some work in the passing.

Both team made their share of early season mistakes (fumbles, int’s, offsides, etc..). However, for a team of primarily two-way players Newport definitely won and seemed to be the better team tonight. Newport stepped up to the challenge of playing a bigger school and showed they will definitely be a team gunning for a 2A district championship.

Wilfong and Oden will make for a great 1-2 running attack punch. The "D" anchored by #22 (Herald) and #50 (Dieters) should be the teams strong point. Wildcats must get rid of the inner-team turmoil which was seen on several occasions with guys arguing with each other on the field…..if they can over come that, they just might be in for another 2005 type of season.

Newport's Oden any relation to the Oden that played at Holmes back in early 70's?

Great Job Cats !! They have a lot of weapons. they need to play better Def. and get the players in the right spots. Good Luck this week fellows. I've got season reserve seats and I will be there.
