Young Golfers

I have noticed there are a lot of grade school golfers on the high school teams this year. A lot more than usual. I know Boone has 2 8th graders, Dixie and Ryle both have a couple. Seems golf is being played at an earlier age. Any thoughts?

Golf is one of the most "objective" sports for any coach. If a kid can shoot the score, he deserves to play, whether he's 12 or 18.

One sport, where the age is not as critical. Going from tee to green, can be accomplished by MS players and it gives some an opportunity, to compete for your HS team.

Amen. I've got an 8th grader and a 6th grader in my top 5 right now.

   9th and 6th here... this is only the second season for either of them. A lot of room to grow. :thumb:

We start them early here at GRC too. We even have a 5 year old that has made national news. He finished in 5th place I believe at Pinehurst 2 weeks ago.

We can't compete with that...

I started playing for NCC when I was in 8th grade.

I started playing for Bell in 8th grade, and we had a kid that was in 6th grade that had been on the team a couple of years already. That was Matt Gann who played at Morehead the last 4 years and is about to go to Florida and turn pro. I'd say it worked out for him.

West Jessamine has an 11 year old 6th grader Fred Allen Meyer and Travis Rose who is either an 8th or 9th grader, both playing in the team's top five. As I understand it they have a very competitive team. With the two I have mentioned they will be a force to be reckoned with for a several years to come.

Brings up the same old question.....Should a high school student (let's say a soph) be displaced by a 7th grader? I understand that many programs need the younger players to field a full team and that is great, but what about a school that has enough players within the high school, but better players that are not yet in the high school?

Who are some of the better younger golfers in the NKY area and which ones are playing High School golf? I was talking to someone about the 7-up tour for Juniors run by Darryl Landrum?

I always try to round up my friends for a day at the course. With that said...Im the only one who seems to go.

One thing I wish my parents would have done is took me to the golf course more when I was younger and made me play all the time. It was kinda impossible tho when football, basketball and baseball all got in the way.

This happens at GRC all the time...we will have over 80 golfers try out for the golf team. We will keep around 20...2 teams. When my son was a Sophomore he did not make the team....tried out again the next year and made it....also got a golf scholarship to Union.
