Russell to play Ironton in 2009

Featured Replies

I may be mistaken...but I don't think Belfry has ever beaten Ironton. We had a couple of games taken from us.....especially in Ironton...but i don't remember ever logging one in the win column.

The year Ironton was State Runner-Ups, either 99 or 2000, when we had Jonathan Wright at QB and Derick Pauley at WR, we beat them at Belfry. It is the only win Belfry has ever had against te Tigers.

Thatw as a pretty good Tiger team too, they had Jason Harmon at RB who went on to play at Michigan State, and Reggie Arden was a Junior that year, Arden signed with Ohio State as a 4 star player but never panned out.

Yep. Wright to Pauley on curl routes all night long, along with RP Vipperman for 3 and 4 yards eeked that one out.

Couple of games taken from us?? Bad officiating?

You OBVIOUSLY have no clue what he's talking about when you play against the Mighty Tigers at "Tank". Of course it been quite a while since the Red Devils have played Ironton. I don't like the "What Ifs" either, but you can almost count on one TD being called back. Question mark me if you wish but I've played there and coached there and have wondered about several calls that were made late after it was clear the runner/receiver would score. Heck, maybe that hold was there but the official couldn't get his flag out quick enough???? Point is any visiting team had better come into Tank win no matter what happens or you'll go home with an "L".

The last time Ashland beat Ironton was in 1990, but the Tomcats had to play ball control offense to seal the win late in that game.

Oh, by the way I applaud Russell for getting Ironton on the schedule in 09!!! My wish would be to see the old OKAC come back!!!!

Mine too.

And I did play there and you better be about 2 TDs better than them if you want to win in Tank.

Lets see. A holding call that happened late after it was obvious that the runner was going to score. Where else have I seen that?

Well those flags come out plenty early enough at Putnam;) But more often than not its against Ashland IMO.

Last year's game between Russell and Ashland is one for the ages. Lets not taint it with all of this..... I'm sure Red Devil fans have NO criticism about the 2004 game at Putnam?

Back to the topic....Ironton under Lutz will always be a force to be reckoned with in our area PERIOD!!!

Yes indeed - and you should always play the best teams in your area.

Thanks to realignment Russell is no longer in a 7 team district, allowing them much more flexibility in scheduling.

I never mentioned the block in the back that was called as the runner was crossing the goal line in last years Russell/Ashland game. But, since you brought it up, the flag was thrown 30 or so yards behind the play and all the way across the field. Seems some Belfry folks were saying the same type of things last year. And if you go back to Bell Co in the early 90s there have been alot of people complaining about questionable calls or no calls in that place for a long time.

But back to Ironton. Any time you can pick your own officials it has to be an advantage.;)

Play the best,right on Graybeard:thumb:

True, but always a good test. In 2005 Ashland lost by 1 point, shanking a field goal in the final seconds and letting a victory slip away. It was one of the best high school football games I've ever seen.

I was at that game and you're right, it was a great game. Very fun to watch. I was hoping Ashland could pull that one off.

Ironton seems to be down lately. They were that year anyway. They had one really good running back but the rest of the team looked nothing like the Ironton teams I played in high school.

The Russell / Ironton game is one I'll have circled on my calender for 09.
