96 Cats among best ever( great read***)

Featured Replies

No disrespect to all the national champions but the 96 team is the greatest team ever assembled. Duke from 91 and 92 wouldn't be within 15 points of this team. The Florida Gators of the last two years wouldn't be within 20. The only team I think could give the 96 squad a game was the 1990 UNLV Runnin' Rebels.

Were are these players now? Only a few even made it to the NBA and were noticable out of the so-called 9. Great, but not the best team ever. Didn't this issue come up on ESPN a few months ago?

So earlier in the thread you said we shouldn't go by the # of NBA players because its what they did in college and now you are arguing they werent good NBA players. What a contradiction.

As for NBA players Walker has had a great NBA career, Anderson's injuries have kept him from doing the same and the rest have all had their moments.

UMass and Miss. St. both beat them. UMass, they just didn't have an answer for the quick guards and Mr. Camby, who killed them inside. If that team had a weakness, it was inside. Once teams got passed the press, which I'll give you didn't happen to often, UK was very vulnerable on the inside.

They would definately be top 3 behind:

Duke '92, who absolutely bashed the Fab 5 by 20. 26 of 34 wins by double digits

and

UNC '82, MJ, Perkins, Worthy, etc. Dean Smith

You fail to mention that the 92 team had to go to overtime to beat the Kentucky team that only had 1 player who even sniffed the NBA, which was the star player Mashburn. That team wouldn't come close to the 96 team.

Look at what that team did to VanHorn, Duncan, and Camby in 3 games in a row.

College Basketball didn't have that much talent that year either.

and "Check the draft class."

Can't see your argument on this one but the players that fell short to the Cats included the likes of:

Tim Duncan

Marcus Camby

Ray Allen

Keith Van Horn

Allen Iverson

Stephan Marbury

This list does not mention Kentucky's players. Now Duncan and Horn would go in the '97 draft but Marbury, Camby, Iverson and Allen all went in the '96 draft. Of that group UK had wins over Camby, Marbury, Horn and Duncan.

UK fans don't really think that team could beat either UNC '82 and/or '93 or Duke '91 and/or Duke '92, do they?

suit 'em up!!! While you're at it suit these guys up against the '75 and '76 Indiana team!!

I would really like to see how much "hops" the players on either one of the Duke or NC teams would have after 40 minutes of running through the '75 and '76 Indiana team's brick wall screens and picks.I seriously doubt Laetner being able to tough out the screens for 40 minutes (or even 30)..Jordan..maybe..but they would affect his shot.Let alone trying to play against an 11 player deep '96 Ky team. Then let's put them up against some of the UCLA teams....

I personally feel the only team in history that could compete with the '96 cats would be the Indiana team...and just because of the superb shape they were in!! One loss in 2 years means more to me than 2 consecutive championships!!

Correction my friend. I said only time will tell.

What moments?

What are you talking about? The draft class has little to do with the talent. What if some of the talent stayed in school. Van Horn, Duncan, Battie, Knight, along with many others were in college that year.

Van Horn, maybe. Knight, Travis, WOW! Battie, seriously. Duncan, all-time best PF.

That class was weak. Take out Duncan and you have almost nothing.

Duke '91 and or '92 holds that title.

Duke's '92 team almost got defeated by a young Kentucky team in the regionals, and it took a miracle throw and shot for them to win. That team, as well as the one in '91, couldn't hold a candle to the '96 UK team.

'92 UK was overachievers who left it all on the court in NJ. Hats definately off to that team. I would consider them in the top 20.

So you think they could and not the Fab 5. Are you serious? And what about the '93 and/or '05 Tarheels. That '01 Duke team was pretty good too, and very very well conditioned.

I'll give you three and a half out of those six. Duncan, AI, Jesus Shuttlesworth, and a half on Starbury.

Camby and Van Horn never lived anywhere close to their hype. They made it though.

Cool with me. Bobby has never done too well against K's Duke teams. Teacher usually loses to student in those match-ups.

'91 Duke beat UNLV, the year older version of one of the most talented teams ever. How can you say that about '91 Duke?

In '96, all major teams thoughout history were down. It was a mid-major year in college basketball. Probably the best one on record since the 60's.

Not sure that is a totally true statement.

Bobby beat Duke in '87 in the Sweet 16.

While the General wasn't coaching the team the club he assembled beat one of K's best in the same round in 2002.

From what I could find they met in '87, '92, '96, '97. The General won in '87 and '97 while K won in '92 and '96.

I don't see how you could say that Bobby has never done well against K's teams when they rarely played and finished .500.
