I will try to explain it to you SLOWLY. The fact is they did not have 1 great interior defensive player like a Patrick Ewing or Marcus Camby type, but they were so quick with their double teams. Walker, McCarty, and Pope all played great interior defense. And with their traps the other guys were so quick on their rotations that it was very effective.

Are there any other ACC teams you'd like to throw in the mix? Perhaps we should have the top 10 ACC teams before we start with any of the rest of the huddled masses.

 

FWIW, I think the best team ever was '91 UNLV. And if we bring up that they lost to Duke then I would counter that this discussion must be limited to unbeaten teams because even the best teams still lose on some night. That win was a bloody miracle.

Custas(spelling), Camby, Jones, Duncan, Dampier, and Wallace all killed them in the paint. Just to name a few. That team was based on tiring out the other teams ballhandlers and forcing them to make dumb decisions with the basketball. That's probably why they call it a press. Pressure the ballhandlers so that they can't get it to the post players. Where are all the fans who actually watched the UK games when Pitino was coaching?

At no point in his life has Walker even considered defense as a part of the game. He and Pitino fell out about that while he was here. McCarty is too slim and Pope is too slow. What games did everyone else miss that you saw?

Duncan had 14 points and bunch of turnovers. He was 2-7 from the field in the blowout. UK also forced him to have 5 turnovers. What NBA teams hold Duncan to that?

Camby was the best player in college basketball that year and in November he killed them. In March he had a good game, 25 points, but a lot of them came late in the game if you watched the ball game when UMass was down, and yes they did make a run, but for most of the game Camby was held in check. Dampier was 2-11 from the field and 2-4 from the FT line against Kentucky. Wallace had 29 points against UK, but a lot of that was hitting outside shots, and not necessarily just in the paint. He also had 6 turnovers that UK forced him into, which is a big reason why UK's post defense was so good, because they forced so many turnovers.

 

As for Jones, I assume you are talking about Jones from Miss. St who played Small Forward, which isn't the issue you are discussing. And I have no idea who Custas is so I can't argue that.

^ BTW, for the game against UK, Custis played 39 minutes, was 3/7 from the field, 8 pts, and 3 turnovers.

As for talking about Pope, Walker, and McCarty's defense, I already said individually they were not great defenders individually, but together, with the way the trapped and rotated as well with all the quickness on the perimeter, they were a very good interior defensive team.

From where pld said that Camby had done nothing in the league, have you seen his numbers the last few years? He has pretty much been the best shot blocker in the league the last couple of years. If the guy wasnt so brittle, he would probably have several block titles. You could probably count on him for a double double every night last year, then throw in a couple of blocks.

I dont think pld realizes that you have the most ridiculous memory for UK basketball and thinks that you will just take what he says as the truth. Isn't there some kind of rule against posting false info?

You can argue this thread for days or weeks, the fact remains the same that UK won the national championship and statistically was extremely dominating that year. Regardless of anyones opinion weather they were dominating or not the record books will not change IMO Pitino might have had one of his better coaching job that year, just to keep all of that talent playing a good amount of minutes. A lot of coaches wouldn't have been able to accomplish that but he did. (FWIW, I'm not a huge Pitino fan)
