Just like in other sports, it comes down to the size of the school. The bigger schools have more to choose from which equals better golfers, the small schools less to choose from which equals not as many good golfers. I talked about this in the baseball thread also, maybe we should take a lesson from our neighbors to the North. Ohio has a state championship for each sport in each class. I know in Northern Kentucky, it is tough for the Beechwoods, Villas, or Bellevue's to compete againest the Covington Catholics or Ryles, in every sport. Just a thought.

I like the new poposal. It would make for a more competitive state tournament and allow for more talented kids to get in.

 

There are some other points in the above posts that I also agree with. Golf is not like other sports. My experiences with dealing with high school golfers goes back to when we started our program in the early '90's. Our best golf teams were then we had golfers whose parents made sure they had all they needed in the best equipment, paid for lessons, and saw that their kid played gof most of the summer. I agree with LBBC, unlike other HS sports, the coach does not play as big of a role. He/she makes out a schedule, sets up practices after July 15th, and takes the kids to the matches. Most of the "practice" are done during the spring/summer by the student on their own or with their parent. That is what makes St. X so good in golf. One of the parents of a golfer from their school once told me that most of the kids that play for them are from famlies that belong to country clubs around Jefferson County. He said St. X will have up to 80 kids try out for golf in some years. That's why they've won about 20 state titles. Don't misunderstand me, they have a good coach. But his table is already prepared before the season ever starts. Some of the kids could probably give him golf lessons.

 

Back on subject, I think the proposal is a good one and will help.We had a kid at our school that had been to 5 straight state tournaments, had finished runner-up once, and in the top 5 two other times, but had a bad day during the regional tournament at Morehead in '98 and missed out qualifying by one stroke. IMO he was the best high school golfer in the state that year, and would have won it if he could have gotten there because it was held at a course that he played quite frequently, Gibson Bay in Richmond. With Boucher's new plan, he would have been there. It allows for more good golfers to be in the tournament, and I like that.

So much of the development of a golf player is done NOT by the HS coach.

 

There was a team this week that brought 8 players to a match. Each player had their OWN and separate private swing coach. Two visited a sports psychologists on a regular basis and three worked with a trainer.

 

And this was on their OWN COST. My players don't have the ability to pay for these costs.

 

On a consistent basis, I cannot compete against this. It is not like basketball, where I am developing the players. The development for golfers comes OUTSIDE of the HS golf season.

 

I even had a college coach say they give almost no concern to their HS golf match results in recruiting for golfers for their college. They want to know about the tournaments outside of HS.

 

So, you have the one school that has a wealthy clientele and can afford all of this (the private coaches, traveling to play in PGA-sponsored tournaments, members of country clubs, etc, etc) and they have a HUGE advantage. Take only one team and that one school may not win it 2 times out of 10 years.

 

Take the runnerup and now the other schools can have a realistic chance to compete for a berth in the state tournament. A state tournament berth could be the highlight of their golfing career.

Very true, if a kid wants to get recruited to play in college, he needs to play in every summer event possible. They also need to start as early as possible because they can work their way up through all the various summer tournament series. Colleges aren't going to pay attention to those nine hole scores you shot in golf matches, they will be looking at the 18 hole tournaments you played in the summer, and if your school can pull it off, all of the weekend tournaments in high school.

 

I still think the new proposal is the way to go.

Not true. On the girl's side, Beechwood and Villa are two of the stronger golf teams and would trounce Ryle, Cambpell, Dixie, etc, etc.

That would be a good proposal for october board meeting. First day team tourney for 18 holes, then on the second day all the individuals can play for themselves to get a true state champ golfer! Have a team state champ and an individual state champ.

Only problem with this is I don't think they could handle all of the people that would be there! Would be a whole lot more than in the past. I'm sure they could come up with something.

You know, that's not such a bad idea; kind of the best of both worlds. Let's look at how it compares to the other sports that have both team and individual champions - track/field, cross country, wrestling and swimming come to mind; I'm sure that there are more. T

True, but have to remember these are high school players and not PGA professionals. Most kids are going to shoot pretty close to the same score every time they play.

I've got a kid that usually shoots in the 70's or low 80's that shot 100 in club championship. I've got some more that will shoot right around 75 every time that can go to another course and shoot 85. We usually see things pretty similar but not here.

I see what you are saying. In fact, the more I look at my post and your post, the more I think I made a goofy comment. You make some great points. High school golfers are some of the most inconsistent golfers in the world. Except for my team. We can shoot 170 anywhere!! :mad: :lol:
