If you are referring to taking a step up from not coaching at all, then you are correct. If you mean to imply that Bath is a step up over Greenup, you are sadly mistaken IMO. Bath County's lack of tradition when compared to GC's shows a huge discrepancy between the two schools with Greenup leading the way.

 

I agree with Mr. Log Mountain Boy and Mr. rojas4. The political atmosphere at Greenup County makes the coaching job at most any other school look good. Bath County is clearly a step up because my contacts in Owingsville tell me that they want a winner and that Hicks is a step in that direction. Many believe that, other than cheerleading, Greenup County does not have a winner mentality.

Can that carry over to Basketball?

Bath will be unquestionably a better job than GC. If you read Jesse Stuart’s book “The thread that runs so true”, you will see that Greenup County has been plagued for years. The only reason GC had a few good years in the 80’s and 90’s is they were fortunate to have enough talent to overcome the coaching and politics. I’m not knocking Coach Ward, as I think he was a very good defensive coach, but I didn’t enjoy falling asleep watching his offense work. He did win games….

I look forward to seeing Bath County start winning and being competitive in the 16th.

Slick, Slick, Slick...Greenup didn't have a few good years. 12 District Championships. 5 Regional Championships. 2 Elite eight appearance, and 1 final four appearances...that's tradition.

 

By the way General, Randy Ward doesn't have a monopoly on Greenup Co. basketball...there has been success since he has left (a little) and there will be more...patience.

Success since he has left. I don't know how you measure success Zippi, but 0 District titles and 0 region titles and only 2 trips to the region as a runner-up. I measure success differently I guess.

Also Slick let me remind you my friend it takes someone to cultivate talent and with a school the size of GC there is always going to be talent. The bottomline is that it's left up to the coach to beat the bushes and get the best kids on the floor. That was the strong point of Ward and the downfall of his predecessors overall.

the point I was trying to make is their is a regional championship and final four appearance before Ward, and yes, their has been a district championship since him (see 2006).

So sorry I forgot that one district title. I guess it used to be almost a given we used to win those titles, it used to be a matter of contending for a trip to Rupp.

After what all heppened last year I"m surprised that they hired him. But knowing him , I wish him the best of luck with his new oppurtunity.

I thought he did a very good job with the talent that he had.
