June 21, 200719 yr Never seen Citizen Kane or Gone with the Wind and nothing in me really wants to see either. To give a testimony about TKAM, we show it to our freshmen students (14 year old males and females) after they are done reading the book. They sit spellbound for the most part. A 14 year old male watching a black and white movie sitting and actually watching it. No way I think they do that for Citizen Kane. They do the same for Sergeant York, too. I used to show it to my U.S. History classes and they loved it.
June 21, 200719 yr Lord Of The Rings from 2001 is the only movie from this decade to make the list. I guess the judges haven't seen Bug yet... Don't get Atticus started on Bug. He said forcing someone to watch that movie would be a good way to get secret information from the enemy.
June 21, 200719 yr I took a film lit class in college as an elective; back in about 1976 or 1977. It was a lot of fun. Started with DW Griffith's "Intolerance", The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, the silent comedies of Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, The Battleship Potemkin, etc. But by far and away my favorite movie that we watched in the class was Citizen Kane.
June 21, 200719 yr Citizen Kane is a movie that you are always pretty much told is the best ever, so much that even though I've never seen it I say it's the best ever. Apparently my wife hates it so I don't think I'll ever see it.
June 21, 200719 yr A lot of the allure of "Citzen Kane" is technical. It was one of the the first time deep focus photography was used where you could see what was going on in the background as well as the foreground. There were also visible ceilings. That was a revelation. The story was also based loosely on newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst, who of course, despised the film. Add in the dynamic personality of Orson Welles and you have one of the all time greats. BTW, I don't consider it the greatest ever, but I can see why many in the movie industry do. Agreed. I love the movie, but a lot of its hoopla comes from it being so incredibly ground-breaking for its time in terms of cinematography, such as using different lens, focus and cropping/framing/camera angle techniques.
June 21, 200719 yr Don't tell me To Kill A Mockingbird has already been on?!!!! Last year, Atticus Finch was the Film Institute's Greatest Hero and I assume the film would be at least top 3. I have been in and out but haven't seen it yet. Was glad to see The Searchers and Shane rank way up there tho. Atticus, if you go to this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFI%27s_100_Years..._100_Movies_%2810th_Anniversary_Edition%29 it compares the 1997 list with the 2007 list. You'll see that TKAM has moved up 9 places since then. So by 2017...who knows?
June 21, 200719 yr I was extremely dissappointed, The Shawshank Redemption was nowhere to be recognized..Morgan Freeman should have raised some hell:fight:
June 21, 200719 yr From the Wikipedia entry: Biggest Move Up: The Searchers (12, up from 96) Biggest Move Down: The African Queen (65, down from 17) Highest Debut: The General (New at #18) Highest Drop Out: Doctor Zhivago (from 39) Here's my problem with this: Not one single one of these movies were made any time recently. Doctor Zhivago was the most recent, being released in 1965. Only 4 from the last 10 years made it onto the list. What was it that happened in 10 years that made people suddenly decide there was a huge difference in where they should be placed? And I felt there were way too many silent films on the list. In no way is "The General" the #18 movie of all time.
June 21, 200719 yr ^Shawshank Redemption was on there. #72. Are you sure? Not to question your judgement but I recorded that program and had to watch it twice to make sure..and I never saw it.
June 22, 200719 yr Are you sure? Not to question your judgement but I recorded that program and had to watch it twice to make sure..and I never saw it. Don't know what to tell you. They showed the scene where he plays music over the speakers in the prison.
June 22, 200719 yr Don't know what to tell you. They showed the scene where he plays music over the speakers in the prison. Touche...I stand corrected. I must have been on something..:irked:
