I will accept the challenge to contact that lawyer, and my pledge is that lawyer will give me something in writing stating 1) that the Duke defense attorneys did an unbelievable job overcoming difficult odds and 2) that the money they charged to defend all of these players represents a fair estimation of the cost it reasonably took to mount that effort. If your lawyer gives me a response indicating that the defense was easy and that they could have accomplished the same thing for a fraction of $1M, I pledge to publicly declare you as the smartest person on BGP, and will pay for the cost of your choice of BGP paraphernalia at the BGP store. Now YOU TELL ME, YES OR NO, IS IT GOING TO TAKE A GENIUS TEAM OF ATTORNEYS AND $1 MILLION DOLLARS TO WIN MY CASE??? Yes or no. June 17, 200719 yr ^Yes, if you were one of the Duke lacrosse players, fighting against a rogue prosecutor, armed with an indictment (one of the single greatest weapons that there is in western culture), whether he had evidence or not, and given the people who had lined up against you, to do what they did in as short a time as they did, would have cost you a small fortune, $1MM certainly being reasonable. What you are not getting here, IMVHO, is that with a sex case, you need not have any physical evidence, witnesses, or any other evidence for that matter, at all, in order to get all the way to a jury. The girl's say so and the prosecutor's belief in her is enough. Happens every day, in every jurisdiction in this country. And it takes VERY good, and expensive, lawyering, to make indictments like this go away, particularly in such a short time period. I think that answers your question fairly. Now, you have been very sure of yourself in your posts here. These "very simple facts" look great on paper & all, but are incomplete - they appear to assume that the legal system works properly & the DA is out for justice. In hindsight we all know now that was never the case here. Heck, the system never really started working properly until the NC attorney general intervened. About 15 months later, justice is beginning to work itself out. There are a lot of billable hours to account for over the last 15 months. As an example, the bolded fact was buried in 1,844 pages of technical documents (eventually) turned over to the defense (remember, since Nifong was bluffing the entire time, it took months to turn over what he did have). A fair estimation, but you need to account for multiple lawyers because there were multiple defendants. You also need to account for at least two of the lawyers essentially giving up their entire practices to focus solely on this case. Again, lawyers are not in this to make everyone feel good, they are in it to make money.
