One of the most radical out of control concerts I have ever attended was at the Ky Speedway in 2001 (I think that is the correct year). Metallica/Kid Rock/Korn.

 

If we ever have the occasion to meet, I have a story for you from that concert that will blow you away.

 

I was there, but I think it was in 2000, because it was just about a month before I meet the women who is now my wife. System of a Down and Powerman 5000 were there as well. Easily the most insane event that I have ever been to. There must have been 100,000+ at the speedway. Witnessed many a thing that just shouldn't happen in public.

 

Korn was outstanding, and Metallica rocked as expected.

I'll help you out since I don't live in Lincoln County any longer, I can probably appreciate the attractions better. Stanford is the second oldest city in Kentucky (to Harrodsburg) and got its name (Stanford = Standing Fort) from nearby Fort Logan withstanding repeated hostile Indian attacks.

 

William Whitley House State attraction- William Whitley built the first brick home west of the Allegheny Mountains and it still stands today off Highway 150 between Stanford and Crab Orachard. The property also contains Sportsman Hill, which was the first counter-clockwise horse racing track in this country due to Whitley's disdain for all things British (which ran horse races clockwise). http://parks.ky.gov/statehistoricsites/ww/index.htm

 

Other Historical Sites- Lincoln County was one of the three original counties (with Jefferson and Fayette) and the county seat for most of Kentucky was Stanford. Many old land and court records at maintained at the Lincoln County Courthouse some of it on parchment and sheep skin. Logan's Fort was one of the first settlements in Kentucky (along with Fort Boonesboro and Fort Harrod) and was located just west of present-day Stanford. There are plans to recreate the Fort, which I hope happens, but now there is nothing more than a placque. Cedar Creek Lake- near the William Whitley House, this 784 acrea lake is stocked with various fish and provides great fishing opportunities. http://fw.ky.gov/cedarlake.asp

 

Stanford Drive-In Theater- one of the few remaining drive-in movie theaters left in the state. I remember when they had a playground with a working kiddie train. Now, they have a flea market during the days and movies at night. http://www.stanforddrivein.com/

 

Dix River Country Club- 18 holes, restaurant, pro shop, swimming pool. This facility is "shared" with Garrard Countians with members from both counties. It is located just north of Stanford on Highway 27. http://www.dixrivercc.com/

 

These are the main tourist/recreational activities in Stanford and Lincoln County. Combined with a day of sightseeing in Danville (Constitution Square, etc.) and Harrodsburg (Fort Harrod, etc.), one may be both enlightened as to our state's formation and historty as well as entertained.

You can go out to the spur and read all the signs honoring your famous people. You can also wait by the emergency ramp and hope to see a coal truck have to use it.

 

I've already read all the signs honoring my famous people but I will have to try that second one out. Always wanted to see a big coal truck sink up in that quicksand.

If you enjoy a nice, quite, easy-going community, then you'll love my hometown and county. Booneville, the county seat, is the smallest county seat in the state (pop. 130) and Owsley County is the 2nd smallest populated county in the state with 4,800 people (Robertson County is the smallest county in the state in both population and land area).

Our county is probably the only county in the state that doesn't have a stop-go traffic light, and never have had one in our history. We do, however, have a caution light in town at a 3 way stop. We also do not have any fast food restuarants, such as McDonald's, Burger King, etc. We've never had any. But we do have some excellent country cooking type restuarants, and the family owned Spencer's Dairy Bar, which has been in business since the 1940's and are known for their milk shakes and Big Spencer Burgers.

We have some beautiful countryside, and every April and October several thousand horse riders visit our county for the spring and fall trail rides and camp outs sponsored by the Owsley County Saddle Club. The event lasts 3 days.

We have celebrated Daniel Boone Days since the early 1970's. It's a 3 day festival similar to many other mountain festivals and is held over the July 4th weekend. Daniel Boone once owned land in Owsley, and the county seat is named after him.

Our county is small, but that is an advantage in living here. Most people know one another, and you speak to or wave at about everyone you meet. And it's not uncommon to see people who have been away to other states for years retire and move back to their roots.

And now we have a brand new 9 hole golf course (my avatar) 2 miles from Booneville. I had to get that plug in.
