October 15, 200817 yr In 1982, a friend and I were driving around listening to this new CD he had just purchased. There was this one song that we couldn't get enough of and we kept playing it over and over in his cassette deck. The song was "Change of Heart" by Tom Petty who officially became my favorite artist that night and remains so to this day. Every time I listen to "Keep on Rockin in the Free World" by the great Neil Young and I hear the line "I see a woman in night with a baby in her hand, under an old streetlight, near a garbage can. Now she puts the kid away and she's gonna get a hit. She hates her life and what she's done with it. There's one more kid who'll never go to school, never get to fall in love, never get to be cool" I still get goose bumps. Definitely one of the most powerful moving song lyrics I have ever heard.

October 15, 200817 yr Allison Krauss singing "When You Say Nothing at All". I've said it before and I'll say it again - this is a double whammy. What red-blooded guy, a) wouldn't want to have the angelic Ms. Krauss singing to him, and, b) telling him that he doesn't have to say a thing. Close second - "Whiskey Lullaby" w/Brad Paisley. Finding a quirky movie soundtrack that you really like. Guilty pleasures - Valley Girl and Napoleon Dynamite, O Brother Where Art Thou, The Graduate. Watching a great musical - I've seen many. Discovering good international - particularly Celtic - music, then going back and finding some of the early influences. But nothing - nothing beats listening to your child on stage. Watching her play the part of Mme. Thenardier in the high school musical "Les Miserables" (and some high school musicals are pretty bad, but not this one - it was a "perfect storm" of talent that year, and several of the principals are now college music majors), singing the national anthem at a Georgetown College football game, performing arias in pageants - as a parent, it doesn't get any better than this.
