9th Region Draw

Featured Replies

I believe that Beechwood takes the win over Newport with not too much effort. Elliot may throw a few innings but that may serve beneficial to get his feet wet for this years regional and the second round game.

I do believe that Ryle has the pitching depth and offense to withstand Ludlow who may be able to keep it close if they can play solid defense. The only way Ludlow can win is if York is VERY good and it is a low scoring game. I like Ryle.

I'm going to take Dixie over Highlands. I believe the emotional lift of scoring 6times in the bottom of the 7th to win the district will carry over for one more game, especially with Nichols on the mound. If Highlands does not throw Allen and Dixie gets on the board early it could be an early exit for the Blue Birds.

I think that a Bleser-Krohman first round game has the pregame hype to be a low scoring game between Cov Cath and Boon just like the Cov Cath and HC district game did with Bleser-Ryan. I think the lineup of Cov Cath will be enough for them to get the big hits and make it out of the first round.

Does anyone know how often it occurs that all district winners advance in the first round in the 9th region? I know it didn't happen last year.

IF Highlands and CCH meet in the semi's wouldn't that be their first match up of the season? I believe the one scheduled got cancelled.

Cov. Cath Boone is a very scary first round game for Cov. Cath, Boone can hit with the best with them and with Krohman on the mound you never know, also if Nichols pitches which i think he will, Dixie Highlands will be a good one, Ryle and Beechwood should make it to the second round rather easily.

Highlands has played CCH twice this year and lost 2-1 in the regular season and they lost 5-3 in the Doc Morris Tournament Championship.

No CovCath first game of the season was against Cov Holy Cross and as posted, they played and beat HHS twice. CovCath third to last game of the season was to be against Highlands at Highlands but that game was cancled do to wet grounds.

Some predictions and thoughts about each team:

1)Beechwood – got the best draw possible as Newport was their only first round matchup where they do not have to throw Elliott. Game could get interesting if Newport plays great D and scores some runs off of Beechies #2. Should be Beechwood fairly easily and on to face the #1 Raiders.

2)Boone – got the worst possible draw for a district loser. Must throw Krohman to have any chance and CovCath got quite a few knocks off him last time. It won’t be easy this time for the Colonels, though. Boone needs Reed’s defense so hopefully Mark can play. Boone would then need to throw Houlehan IMO to have a chance to get to the finals should they upset highly favored CovCath. I expect the Colonels to win a game closer than expected by most.

3)CovCath – got the second most difficult draw. If the favorites win, they will have to get by Highlands and Ryle to head to sectionals. I imagine that Krumps will go with Bleser and see how the game develops to determine how many innings Josh pitches.

4)Dixie – got the most difficult draw and if the Red Colonels shock the world and win the region, they will have beaten the #4, #2 and #1 teams to do it. First round game should be a dandy with Nichols vs. Allen. I think they bow out vs. the Birds.

5)Highlands- will be tempted to save Allen for a possible match with CovCath. I really think they will give Rawlings a shot at shutting down Dixie and if Zach has good control, they should be OK. The Birds will be refocused after the unexpected loss to Newport and I think they take down Dixie and play a great game to upset CovCath with Allen on the hill in the semis.

6)Ludlow – might as well have drawn Ryle because York is a fine pitcher and Ludlow’s only chance to defeat the #1 Raiders would be with him on the hill. Ryle defeated him 3-0 in the wood bat tourney and will be glad to use metal. Would be a shocker for the Panthers to win as the Raiders are playing very well right now. York is very good and one of the top 3 pitchers in the 9th IMHO.

7)Newport – glad to be here and actually got the best first round draw possible. I don’t see Beechwood using Elliott as they want to try to get to round #2 with their #2 on the hill. I think Beechies win a surprisingly close game.

8)Ryle – my favorite to win it all, imagine that. They certainly got the best draw possible and Coach Roesel has a big decision as to who to start vs. Ludlow. He has 3-4 real good choices with Collins, Hatfield and Hughes. My guess is Collins, who shut out Ludlow in the Doc Morris. Revenge matchup with Beechwood in the semis and that is motivation enough for Ryle. In the finals, Raiders take down Birds and advance to sectionals.

Good luck to all of the young men who have worked hard to get to this point. And, all of us would like to say a big thanks to Champions management for allowing our sons to play in a first class venue for the regional tourney. Monday will be a great day of baseball.

Don't forget that the CovCath vs. Boone County game can be heard live on CovCath Internet Radio starting at around 5pm or so... My guess is that this game just might see a huge, and I mean huge crowd as Boone and CovCath both bring large crowds and with the Dixie and HHS just ending I know that both the Lil Colonels and the Bluebirds will have a ton of fans there as well. Oh what a fun day it will be.

Finally how many will be arriving early to see game #1 and staying until the final out is made in the CovCath vs Boone game.... I will...

Unnecessary

I know its a blind draw, but Ludlow seems to have the worst luck in these blind draws. In 2004 when they made the region, after they beat the #1 team in the region CovCath in the first round of the district and ended up winning the district championship. They got rewarded by getting to play the #3 team in the region in Dixie in the first round. Then if they won that they would have got to play the #4 team in the region in Conner, then it would have been the #2 team in the region in Beechwood in the finals. I know it is a blind draw, but you never see any of the top teams usually get that tough of draws, and I bet somehow CovCath wouldn't have had that tough draw if they could have won the region. Ludlow must just have terrible luck, because now this year they get to play the #1 team in the region in the first round! My friend at Ludlow need to carry a lucky rabbits foot or something to these blind draws for now on...:D

That is not completely true! Most people dont know much about Ludlow, and there are alot now who believe that sophomore Daniel Hammons is the best pitcher on Ludlows teams this year. So Ludlow actually has 2 really good pitchers, and I sure we will see York in this first game!

First game ? It's a one and out tourney. So your picking Ludlow over Ryle?

My biggest worry for Ludlow (other than being over matched playing Ryle) is the catcher and not playing a game on a field with such a big area behind him and constantly worrying about a ball getting past him each and every time there is a runner on base. At Lemker and other fields that Ludlow has played on, the back stop isn't really that far behind him, but at Champion Window it is a huge distance from behind the plate to the back stop....Will it play mind games with him? Don't know for sure, but all the other teams except for Newport have played at Champion field and the catchers have as they say, have been there, done that..... It is indeed a strange feeling having to play on such a large field for the first time.....

Good luck.......

Since I am sure there will not be programs sold at the game on Monday, nor will the Enquirer have rosters in the morning paper to use, how about each team posting it's roster on-line so we can have some information about each team to take with us....

Very good assessment. But of course you're going to be a HOMER and pick your Raiders to win it all. ;) Ryle does seem to have the easiest road to the finals though and they are playing very well right now. I wouldn't mind seeing both them and the Lady Raiders go to state this year.
