May 21, 200719 yr And the Greenup County News is not actually "owned" by the DI. It is, however, owned by the same company as the DI. Meaning what?? Basically the same thing, what I am saying is that the DI has always covered all the area teams around here. They have for as long as I can remember and beyond. Our local area teams besides Ashland is not consodered "icing on the cake coverage" at all, it is not looked at as a "a bonus" for these other local schools. It is expected and for the most part thae DI does a very good job. I do not have a problem with them at all. I feel sure that the DI itself looks at it in this ame way, they pride themselves in covering everyone in this area. They (DI) I don't believe look at is as "bonus coverage" or secondary at all. They have always covered all area teams. Ashland is the hometown team for the DI so naturally the get top billing.
May 21, 200719 yr Author I'm going to bet 60 percent of the DI's advertising comes from within the Ashland city limits. Again, you've got to know where your bread is buttered in the newspaper business. Unfortunately, that requires making some tough coverage decisions. When we advertise in a newspaper, we are not nearly as concerned about the location of the other advertisers as we are about the location of the readers of the publication. We want the newspaper to cater to its circulation base and not its advertising base. After all, we are seeking more customers rather than a relationship with fellow advertisers. Obviously, if the circulation is to increase, people must have a reason to want the newspaper. They are much more likely to want the newspaper if their local interests are covered. With television, the internet, etc., we don't need the local newspaper to keep up with world or national developments. If the circulation is encouraged by having stories of interest to them, the opportunities to increase the business of advertisers increases. Therefore, I think your emphasis on the location of advertisers rather than readers is mistaken. Also, I seriously doubt that Ashland, with its shrinking population, has even remotely near a majority of subscribers to the DI. All of this means that the people at the newspaper better be less Ashland oriented and more area oriented. After all, if you have visited Ashland, you know there isn't much progress taking place there and the population is still dwindling. therefore, they better even out the coverage of major area events- athletic and otherwise.
May 21, 200719 yr If I am not mistaken, the Greenup News says on the front of it, that it is a division of the Daily Independent. ... which is owned by Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. in Alabama.

I read the DI online pretty regularly, and I would agree that other schools in the area do get pretty good coverage. More than maybe should be expected, given the realities of newspaper economics. Enjoy it while you have it, folks in Greenup, Lawrence and Carter counties, because this might be the high-water mark.
May 21, 200719 yr I think if you call John, you may get something different than what was printed. Something different than what was printed? You mean they didn't win the tournament?
May 21, 200719 yr ... which is owned by Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. in Alabama. From what I understand CNHI owns DI and DI owns the Greenup News, I may be wrong, but that is what I understood when it was printed in the DI that they were buying the Greenup News.

Several of the people who have posted in this thread have said that the DI is doing a much better job of covering other local shcools.
May 21, 200719 yr I love the high schoool football preview the paper puts. A much anticipated edition in North-Eastern Kentucky.
May 21, 200719 yr Raceland and Russell are both actually located in Greenup Co., right? You are partially right. Raceland is in Greenup Co. The Russell school district is actually in both Boyd and Greenup. Both of those schools recieve a good amount of coverage from the DI. But both are located only 5-10 minutes away from the DI. The cities of Ashland, Russell, Flatwoods, Raceland, Worthington, Westwood, and Bellfonte are all closesly connected. You cross the city limits of one you are in the city limits of another. Boyd Co and Greenup County High Schools are only 20-25 minutes away from the DI as well. The Daily Independent's main area crosses into Greenup Co where a great deal of its subscribers live. It is a regional paper which I believe was the reason for dropping Ashland from the name.
May 21, 200719 yr No, I would agree it is a bigger deal to get coverage in the bigger paper. But still, in light of the economic restrictions placed on most small papers, a write-up in the county paper of record is all that can be expected. Anything more, especially from a larger media outlet, should be seen as a bonus. Too many people — usually parents — feel that their team is "owed" coverage, and they are not interested in hearing the painful economic realities that are handicapping small newspapers. This is not the Wall Street Journal we are talking about. There is not a major size difference in the two papers you speak of. What is printed in the DI on a daily basis is almost the same writings that are printed each Thursday in the Greenup News. The exception is the Ladies Auxillary meetings. Also the people of Greenup County make up a very large majority of DI subscribers. They are a big reason that the DI still exist. They also are the same people that work for the companies that spend money on advertising for the DI to continue operation so I say that their is a legitimate reason for them wanting coverage of their local team. I am sure that the fine people of Greenup County are intelligent enough to realize that no one owes their teams anything. The DI also realizes that without those same people buying their paper that it would be tough to continue to operate as they now do. The DI is also distributed into surrounding counties.

I knew both schools were at least close to the Boyd line, and thanks for refreshing my memory about the Russell district. It's good that the DI covers them so well. For an example of how limited coverage can be by small newspapers, Corbin is located in Laurel County, but the London Sentinel-Echo, which is the paper of record in Laurel County, doesn't cover Corbin sports unless they are playing against North or South Laurel.
May 21, 200719 yr Like I stated earlier, I'm not going to argue that they focus more on Ashland. That is where the majority of their subscription base comes from. I also won't argue that Jackson has more upside and is much more athletic. I think that's a given, but I believe that Euton will be one of the top players in his class when he's a senior. A majority of the subscribers do come from Ashland with most of the rest coming from Russell, Raceland, Boyd Co, Fairview and Greenup Co. I actually agree with you. Don't pass out or anything. Alot of what they cover depends on how well the teams are doing as well. I hope you are right about Euton.

Thats a shame for a school like Corbin. They should recieve alot of coverage in football this coming season. Its a different area though. Laurel Co is more spread out than the Ashland area. There are alot of schools within 10 miles of each other.

I am sure that the fine people of Greenup County are intelligent enough to realize that no one owes their teams anything. The ADI has a daily circulation of 19,000. The Greenup Co. paper's circulation is 3,000 weekly. That's a big difference in both the newspaper business and the real world, when you consider there are 150K+ ADIs published for every 3,000 of the Greenup Co. paper. And while I recognize there is a significant population of people in Greenup Co. taking the daily ADI, the reality is there are 37,000 people living in Greenup Co. and just shy of 50,000 living in Boyd County. I have to seriously question that a majority of ADI's daily readers come from Greenup County. A significant number, no doubt. Majority, no way.
