Imo there was a time that the charges of mostly Ashland and no one else were true. This definately has not been the case for several years. Yes, they focus on the Tomcats......it is an "Ashland" paper. I believe that they also do a good job of covering other area teams now as well. I have no problems with the Daily Independents coverage and have not had for quite a few years. They do a very good job.

oldrambler, you hit the nail on the head. Until a few years ago most of the sports section was Blazer, but in recent years I think they have done a better job covering other schools. Raceland and Russell have had more press in the last two years then they have ever had. I still wish Raceland would get some more coverage, but it is getting better.

The ADI does a decent job covering local sports. I understand that they have a limited staff to cover the sports section. My problem lies in the fact that kids that play for a local high school are getting recruited by Kentucky, the two youmg men had a chance to visit UK's campus and liked what they saw. For an area of the state that represents a lot of die hard UK fans, this is HUGE news. This news is worthy of being reported by the ADI and it wasnt. In my opinion had an Ashland ball player been in talks with Coach G or had taken a visit to UK there would have been a front page story. I understand that the ADI is biased towards Blazer, righfully so, thats where the money comes from I would guess. But this isnt a small deal, a kid that plays in the 16th getting a possible offer from UK is a big deal. I hope that the ADI chose not to run this story because they were not informed of it and not because they though that other sporting events in the area were more important or because of some bad blood between Blazer and Rose Hill. Maybe Euton and Jackson will get some type of mention in the paper later this week.

Then shouldn't the big concern for fans of those teams be the coverage they get in the Greenup County News Times? Anything from "the Ashland paper," which I'm sure is what a great many people refer to the DI as, should be considered gravy, right?

My company advertises from time to time in the Ashland newspaper. It is our understanding that the newspaper has become a regional publication as evidenced by the dropping of "Ashland" from its name. We were told that circulation has considerably expanded into Carter County, Greenup County, and the Big Sandy area and that the coverage would adjust to the changing customer base.

 

If all of this is true, then it should be the Daily Independent and not the Ashland Daily Independent. Even within the Ashland city limits, I would bet that there are many who follow Fairview, Rose Hill, Holy Family, and Boyd County and who have little interest in the pursuits of Ashland's high school, middle school, and elementary schools.

 

Assuming we have been told the truth, there appears no longer to be any valid reason to give priority treatment to Blazer and its associated schools.

Wrong. You obviously are an outsider looking in. Why should the LHL cover UK when UK has the Kernel right there on campus?

Bad comparison, especially when UK is in the same town and county as the Herald-Leader. And I have several friends who work at the DI, so I do have some insight into the area.

I'm going to bet 60 percent of the DI's advertising comes from within the Ashland city limits. Again, you've got to know where your bread is buttered in the newspaper business. Unfortunately, that requires making some tough coverage decisions.

To start with the Greenup News is owned by the ADI. Many of the stories from Greenup Co. in the ADI were relayed to the ADI from the Greenup News. Also the Greenup News is a once a week publication with a one person Sports Dept/Editor. I believe they only have two reporters including the Sports Dept/Editor. Normally, the only thing that the Greenup News reports is the highlights of games, they do not do stories on scholarships and personal looks at local athletes.

Wrong Schue, the only paper in Greenup Co. is the "Greenup Co. News" and it is a once a week paper only. This paper is owned by the "Daily independent" and basically repeats wht it has in it with the exception of some local and county (couthouse) news stuff. I understand that you are a reporter but you obviously do not know this area or hows it has operated for years and years.

No, I would agree it is a bigger deal to get coverage in the bigger paper. But still, in light of the economic restrictions placed on most small papers, a write-up in the county paper of record is all that can be expected. Anything more, especially from a larger media outlet, should be seen as a bonus.

 

Too many people — usually parents — feel that their team is "owed" coverage, and they are not interested in hearing the painful economic realities that are handicapping small newspapers.

I realize it is a weekly paper. That's all most of the state has to work with. Getting coverage in a larger paper is just a dream for most of the athletes playing HS sports. Naturally, of course, those who do live nearby a larger paper tend to take it for granted.

If I am not mistaken, the Greenup News says on the front of it, that it is a division of the Daily Independent.
