May 21, 200719 yr Having been contacted here on BGP by a sportswriter for a newspaper, he was telling me how difficult it is to cover a WIDE area with limited resources. I don't know the details of the Daily Independents staff, but I can guess they might have the same problem with limited resources and being asked to cover a wide area. I won't say that excuses them all the time, but it needs to be considered if/when something might not be in the paper right away.

The Daily Independent has gotten better about covering local schools. That being said they still tend to focus more on Ashland than the other local schools. I think the coverage of local athletes has declined as a whole over the last couple of years. Sorry, but I also don't think Euton will be that calibur of player either. Jackson to me is much more athletic and has more of an upside.
May 21, 200719 yr Another factor to remember with newspapers that cover a multi-county area: In most cases, the base city also is the one where the most advertising dollars come from. For good or ill, you've gotta know where your bread is buttered.

Jackson to me is much more athletic and has more of an upside. Like I stated earlier, I'm not going to argue that they focus more on Ashland. That is where the majority of their subscription base comes from. I also won't argue that Jackson has more upside and is much more athletic. I think that's a given, but I believe that Euton will be one of the top players in his class when he's a senior.
May 21, 200719 yr It amazes me how many people complain about the DI, and how the other schools, athletes supposedly get no coverage. Check out the link below, and you can see that the Daily Independent does a pretty good job over covering all the local schools and kids. http://www.dailyindependent.com/localsports :thumb: I agree. The DI has done an excellent job of their sports coverage with our local high schools. When called they are always there to do an article or interview a local kid that has signed to play at the next level or done something that deserves recognition. There are times when coverage could be a little better but overall they do a decent job of trying to give every local school their due. It is impossible for them to have a reporter at every local athletic event so it is necessary for a representative from the schools to phone in the info if a write up is desired.

This thread is a waste of time other than to illustrate that your area has a lot of disagreement that exists off the playing field as well as on it. Maybe we should leave it at that.

The Daily Independent was asked to put the story you are talking about on hold by the AAU coaches until the regional and state tournaments were over so their story wouldn't get buried by all of the other coverage. It was admitted that it was held on to a little too long, but that is why the story wasn't published in March when the tournament was played.

It was still a two month delay. Also, if most of the circulation is in Ashland proper, which I doubt, it must be a very small newspaper. Any reliable figures to validate your assertion? May 21, 200719 yr Imo there was a time that the charges of mostly Ashland and no one else were true. This definately has not been the case for several years. Yes, they focus on the Tomcats......it is an "Ashland" paper. I believe that they also do a good job of covering other area teams now as well. I have no problems with the Daily Independents coverage and have not had for quite a few years. They do a very good job. JMO

May 21, 200719 yr In my experience, the Independent sports writers are there when they are notified of a specific event. How they choose which games to cover, I have no idea. But I can say that a sports writer was out at 11:00 p.m. to cover the arrival of the Raceland Lady Rams softball team on their return from the state tourney!
