Any predictions on the upcoming JV tourney next week? I'd have to say that Ryle is the team to beat, as they currently sit on a 22-3 record and have won something like 18 of their last 19 games. They had some rather easy games (and a tournament) cancelled due to weather this season or they would probably be close to 30 wins. This is being done with only freshman (3) and sophomores on their team, no juniors. While the Ryle varsity team loses quite a few quality senior players after this season, there is definitely some talent in the well for Ryle that should keep them very competitive for the next several years.

 

Other solid JV teams that we've seen include Cov Cath (whom Ryle has beaten 4 times this year), New Cath, Campbell County, Dixie, and Conner - though I'm certain there are others out there. Should make for a competitive tournament, though for the life of me I can't figure out how they drew up the brackets. Ryle vs. New Cath in early game doesn't seem to make much sense.

Looks like the Ryle Program is taking root.

I'd say Ryle is the team to beat. Any time you have so many seniors starting varsity, the younger teams are going to benefit by having stronger players. That's how you build a program.

Ryle has my vote. I agree Cov. Cath and Campbell County to be contenders as well.

Someone just faxed me a schedule of the JV tournament. It is questionable, at best. I had heard they just draw names out of a hat to set up the brackets. After seeing them myself, I'm sure that is true. I realize it would be tough to seed 20 teams from top to bottom, but it wouldn't be difficult to send them into tiers (#1-4; #5-8; #9-12; etc). That way you could avoid having two teams from the top tier meet right off the bat while allowing some weaker teams to walk into the quarterfinals. I know it's only JV ball - no need to get too serious here - but at the same time these boys/teams have all worked hard this Spring and this is the big ending to their season. There has to be a better way than how they currently do it. And, yes, this is a little (?) bit of whining here, but Ryle is getting screwed. :irked:

Its a blind draw and no one is getting screwed. It is a JV tournament not a varsity one. Relax and enjoy the games.

Well, that's kind of my point. Regardless of whether it's a JV or varsity tournament, a blind draw isn't real fair. Yes, it's "only" a JV tournament, but it's important to those players and parents and it would seem only reasonable not to expect two of the top teams to meet each other in the first round. I'm quite certain if this were a varsity tournament, people would be very unhappy. Unless, of course, you were one of the weaker teams that enjoyed the benefits of the "blind draw." Trust me, I'm not losing sleep over this and yes, I'll most certainly enjoy the games. But there is a better way to do this.

It is virtually impossible to seed the freshman and JV Regionals in baseball. A blind draw is the only way to do it. Also, if you are a contender for the championship, you will eventually run into a tough team in a tourney like this sooner or later. Good luck to all the teams.
