NKY JV Tournament

Featured Replies

Most people would say that they have no problem with bringing up a Freshman for the tournament, but I believe there needs to be one rule and that is to set a certain number of games and or innings a player must play to be able to participate in the tournament. That would then include or exclude both Juniors and Freshman depending on the how much they played.

What is your take Strike3?

Cooperstown is correct. How much sense does it make for a team like Ryle who has gone 24-3 and has played with all of the same guys for the whole season only to get knocked out the tournment by teams they beat all year just because they have brought in 3 or 4 juniors for that one game.

Here's my thoughts on JV and a tournament....

Play with the teams you've had, all year in a tournament. You may have player, who is getting considerable Varsity time but want to try them at a different position, which I think is perfectly fine..."IF", they have played with the JV in all/most previous games.

A tournament, is about winning but winning, can be about developing younger players, in a competitive setting and not, bringing in "new", to get the job done. Unless an injury, precludes a team from using same pitchers, catchers, then don't add new or Varsity regulars.

I don't like limiting playing time, as that may help some teams and hinder, others. Each team develops talent differently and if one is ahead, they shouldn't be penalized, by limiting time. Keep same KHSAA pitching rules and rest.

I understand where you are coming from Strike3.

I am not talking about limiting playing time, but saying that an individual player, no matter if he is a junior or freshman, would need to play with the JV team a "pre-determined" amount of time to be eligible for the JV tournament. Example- 2 or 3 juniors that start on the varsity team and have not played in 1 game with the JV team, should not be allowed to come down and play in the JV tourmament. It skews the results and make the regular season meaningless.

The Freshman playing with the CAMELS pitched against RYLE in their last meeting, losing 4-2. He has since being dressing with the JV team in all their JV Tourney games.

Having seeing Campbell Co., Cov. Cath and RYLE play I wouldn't think they need to drop anyone down to play, nor do I think their coaches would want it that way. Simply not fair to the guys who've played for them all year long. Having not seeing Beechwood this year, I would think they would be in the same boat as the remaining teams. I know the biggest thing is running out of arms, but that is part of it....give the ball to someone that has been with you all year and see if they can step up and deliver. Remember JV Baseball is about developing guys and getting them ready for Varsity.

When it comes to bringing players up (both for JV and Varsity) it is more about rewarding a player for having a good year. Now when it comes to dropping a player down that is a different situation. Should at least have played in 75% of the games with that team in order to be dropped down, just my opinion. With that said, each school and program handles this differently. A strong JV coach, I would assume, would rather play (win or lose) with his guys (those who have played with him the majority of year) rather than play win with a team of guys being dropped down solely for One or Two games of the year-end tournament.

I understand where you are coming from Strike3.

....:thumb: I agree, plus like c-squared mentioned, they should have played a majority of the games.

I'm extremely competitive but I also understand, that I'm not going to change the make-up of a JV team, to win any local tournament. If someone is dropped down, then a player is losing his spot....getting them ready for summer ball and '08 Varsity, should be the primary concern of coaches. I'm sure most would agree.

I started another thread on this a while back. Got some interesting feedback. :p

Great Game/Strike 3/C-Squared - I agree with you wholeheartedly. I don't have an objection with a team moving a player UP (i.e., freshman moves up to JV or JV player moves up to varsity) for a tournament. It's the moving DOWN process that I don't like. I have no problem with moving someone DOWN in the following instances:

1) player split time between the two teams, so was legitimately part of the younger squad

2) player is being given opportunity to play at a position he doesn't normally play up on the older squad (Strike 3's example), assuming he had spent some time on the younger team.

3) player was full-time player up on older squad, but rarely got a chance to play.

4) player was full-time on older squad and really struggled badly - indicating he probably should have been on younger squad from the beginning.

It's when a player who has played full-time on the older squad and performed very well is allowed to move back down just for 2 or 3 tournaments games that I disagree with. Like you said, C-Squared, you'd like to know who the best JV team really is. At this point, one would assume it's Ryle until proven otherwise (of course, I'm biased :thumb: ).

I know that the Ryle JV coach would rather play (win or lose) with our regular JV guys who have made up the team all year long. There are indeed some stud juniors up on Ryle's varsity team that could come down for these final two games and ensure our win, but why? That wouldn't be our JV squad then, a squad that has been pretty darn strong all year long. I'd rather lose with our real team.

At the frosh and JV levels, sometimes is has to be about more than winning a game/tournament, and more on building a program. At the varsity level, it should then be all about winning.

A tournament, is about winning but winning, can be about developing younger players, in a competitive setting and not, bringing in "new" players, to get the job done.

Indeed.

I'm going to predict a Ryle-Campbell County final. But no doubt any of the four teams could do it. They are all solid ballclubs.

You can count on somebody bringing juniors down...

Beechwood has 2 8th graders a frosh and 3 sophs who have split time between jv and varsity . The 3 sophs have come down to play the first 2 games of the tourney but in different positions . 1 soph did pitch an innning the first game ( where he has only played at varsity ) .No jrs will come down . They only have 1 senior anyway .They have to keep the jrs there for the varsity game today .

Beechwoods l/u will probably be 2 or 3 sophs , 4 - 5 frosh and 2 8th graders .This is what has got them this far . 1 of the 8th graders will probably be on the mound .

There is the example that Strike3 mentioned where sometimes you gotta go with what you got. All the more kudo's to them for getting in this position with some younger players during the year. They should continue to be competitive for the next few years.

Due to injury at the varsity level ,Beechwood is starting only 1 soph (1st year catcher ) .8th grader on the mound with freshman and 7th and 8th graders . I believe the kid throwing for Ryle ia JR (might be a soph ).The future looks pretty good for the Tigers .

Camels lose 8-4 to Cov. Cath. Congratulations to the Colonels. Ryan Sainola pitched a very good game for Cov. Cath. Not a good night for Campbell Co. JV. Nine errors did them in. Not going to win many like that. They looked very much like the Camels Varsity of late.

Ryle defeated Beechwood 10-0 in 6 innings. Ryle starter (sophomore Kyle O'Hara) threw 5 hitless innings before giving way to reliever. Ryle hit the ball very well and, as usual, fielded quite well.

Beechwood is clearly a young team, starting mostly 8th graders and freshmen to Ryle's 3 freshmen and sophomores. Though younger and a bit overmatched in this game, it is obvious that there is some solid talent in the Beechwood program that will keep them strong in years to come. Congrats to them on a fine season.

Championship is now set between Ryle and Cov Cath for 4:00 at (unfortunatley) Turkeyfoot Field. Ryle and CC have met four times already this year, with Ryle winning each one. Two of them were very tight games, while the other two Ryle won handily. It will no doubt be a very good game between two very good teams and a nice end to an enjoyable JV season.

Turkeyfoot's field is looking really nice this year and they have a really nice concession stand. They are serving lots of hot food along with a large varity of snacks and drinks. We have been to several games their and they have an announcer as well.I think it will be a great place to have the championship! Good luck to both teams.

Question:

Is this the last high school game that will ever be played at Turkeyfoot?

Or will Dixie use this field in some type of capacity in the future?

Dixie play's Monday night against Villa Madonna in the district game. That will be the last game. I heard Turkeyfoot will be building a new school or addition in that area, not sure though.
