He was as good as any pitcer that ever stood the mount. His 1968 season was probably the best by any pitcher with and ERA of 1.12. That's amazing to me. If I had to start a team from scratch, he'd be my number 1 pick.
May 9, 200719 yr Gibson and Drysdale at #1 and #2 are great picks. Clemens may have gotten a bump in the rankings as a result of throwing a chunk of bat at Piazza in the WS a few years back. I can't firure out any other reason to rank him ahead of Ryan.
May 9, 200719 yr Eh? I never heard that one. Legal Problems Dave Stewart had some legal problems throughout his career, most notably an arrest for solicitation of a transvestite prostitute. In 1985, after police observed him soliciting the prostitute in downtown Los Angeles, Stewart was arrested a few minutes later in a nearby alley. Also arrested was the hooker, "Lucille." Lucille was actually Elson Tyler, a 27-year-old 6-foot-3 unemployed laborer. "Mr. Stewart said he was unaware that Tyler was a male until after the arrest," Police Cmdr. William Booth said. "That was his statement and we have reason to believe him."

May 9, 200719 yr I thought Mariano Rivera might be on there...but I guess he isn't really known much for beanballs. Just a nasty cut fastball...
May 9, 200719 yr 1.) Bob Gibson 2.) Roger Clemens 3.) Don Drysdale 4.) Sandy Koufax 5.) J.R. Richards 6.) Pedro Martinez 7.) Nolan Ryan 8.) Randy Johnson 9.) "Goose" Gossage 10.) Rob Dibble I did not see Drysdale or Koufax - just going on films, stories and reports. JMO but there are not enough pitchers today that will throw inside, give em' some chinn music or "pluck em'" if need be.
May 9, 200719 yr The great story about Drysdale is when the manager called for the intentional walk and , instead, he plunked the guy with the first pitch and said something like "why waste the pitches?" Drysdale trivia: Who was his wife when he died?

May 9, 200719 yr & the reason they do not is because of the critcism they get for doing so. That may be true, the thing is these guys I mentioned and others did not worry about critisizm, that only added to the intimidation factor. They loved it.

If I had to start a team from scratch, he'd be my number 1 pick. That 1968 season by Gibson is one of the reasons the hight of the pitcher's mound was lowered in 1969. I watched Gibby pitched quite a few times. He would get my vote as the most intimidating pitcher. It was well known that he wouldn't think twice about throwing at batter. Especially if someone had just hit a home run off of him. The next batter knew the next pitch was coming at him.

May 10, 200719 yr Correct but lets give her a little more credit for her basketball skills. She was the only female to try out for an NBA team. Which team? Well you have me on what team she tried out for. I remember her being one of the first, if not the first true female basketball star in the modern era. This was at a time when womens basketball was not as big as it is now, but you still knew who she was. There had to be 25-30 years difference in age between her and Drysdale, but I remember seeing on ESPN as a reporter.
