April 20, 200719 yr The outrage that came with Imus was to generate some repurcussions for his actions. Without the outrage there may have been none. These perpetrators of this violent crime will have repurcussions at the appropriate time.

These perpetrators of this violent crime will have repurcussions at the appropriate time. Then what was the purpose of the outrage at Duke? Had they indeed raped the lying stripper wouldn't they have face repurcussions at the appropriate time? What was the purpose of the outrage regarding Tawana Brawley? Had this woman in fact been attacked wouldn't the attackers have face repurcussions at the appropriate time? Very nice illustration of the double standard.
April 20, 200719 yr You act as though I'm some faithful follower of the Revs, and that's just not the case. What I can't understand is why anyone even bothers to pay attention to them when they go on their crusades. No, but I do see you as an excuse maker for them. Why else would you try to turn the thread into an indictment of those of us who replied about the races of the involved people? One can only ignore blatant racist stupidity for so long, particularly when the biggest offenders are given a free pass by most of the media.

One can only ignore blatant racist stupidity for so long, particularly when the biggest offenders are given a free pass by most of the media. You apparently misunderstood me. My comments were more of me throwing up my hands in frustration over it. It's not right the way the Revs use the media and the way the media tends to give them a free pass. But to be surprised each time the Revs go trotting up to the podium to voice their outrage is just naiive, because we all know it's going to happen. Also, you're being too defensive. I was simply pointing out that nowhere in the article did it read what the race of the people involved were. I give you credit for further investigation, but most people wouldn't bother and would make an assumption based on the names.

What was the purpose of the outrage regarding Tawana Brawley? Had this woman in fact been attacked wouldn't the attackers have face repurcussions at the appropriate time? Very nice illustration of the double standard. you mean the double standard that is illustrated when the national media focus for weeks on the missing white girl in aruba, or the death of the little white model girl in colorado, or the white girls abducted and killed in Florida. Or the outrage by Mr. O'Reilly of the alien that killed the young girl while he was driving drunk Or the outrage of Mr. Hannity when it comes to the IMAMS (sp) who were booted off of a plane b/c they have participated in their religious rituals in the airport earlier and some peopel were afraid. there is plenty of "outrage" out there it is just not the outrage that you want. Why do you get to decide what anyone is outraged about? Did the people in the article do something racist before they raped and murdered their victims? Is that what you want to Revs to yell about. You see, real racism can only be practiced by people who have power, and like it or not most of the REAL POWER in this country in still in the hand of whites. Now, anyone can be a biggot and there are minorities who can call me names, but until someone holds a position of authority and truly oppresses me b/c I am white then they cannot practice racism. What outrages you???
April 20, 200719 yr you mean the double standard that is illustrated when the national media focus for weeks on the missing white girl in aruba, or the death of the little white model girl in colorado, or the white girls abducted and killed in Florida. So none of these were news worthy? Overblown yes, but not newsworthy, no. Or the outrage by Mr. O'Reilly of the alien that killed the young girl while he was driving drunk You left out a very important word, It was an ILLEGAL alien that should not have been in this country in the first place, that had been arrested before and if not for ludicrous laws protecting illegals would have been deported and never would have killed this woman. Or the outrage of Mr. Hannity when it comes to the IMAMS (sp) who were booted off of a plane b/c they have participated in their religious rituals in the airport earlier and some peopel were afraid. What part of their religious rituals calls for them to demand seat changes that put them in positions where they could more easilly control a plane. Call me whatever you want, had I witnessed the same thing either I would have demanded the Imams be removed or I would have removed myself. there is plenty of "outrage" out there it is just not the outrage that you want. Why do you get to decide what anyone is outraged about? Did the people in the article do something racist before they raped and murdered their victims? Is that what you want to Revs to yell about. No, I want Sharpton and Jackson to show the same treatment to ALL accused of crimes or to shut-up and show none. I want to see Sharpton and Jackson make the rounds of the morning shows and tell everyone how the evidence shows without a doubt how guilty these people are. People who make excuses for racist behavior.

What outrages you??? Sorry, but that is post-modernist garbage, we talked about this in another thread not too long ago. Racism either exists subjectively or it doesn't, it is not subject to the objective interpretive whims of those who claim to be offended by it.

Racism either exists subjectively or it doesn't, it is not subject to the objective interpretive whims of those who claim to be offended by it. Main Entry: rac·ism Pronunciation: 'rA-"si-z&m also -"shi- Function: noun 1 : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race (Webster's) If you cannot act on your biggotry you cannot PRACTICE racism. Racism is about power and superiority. It is not garbage. I am not talking about perception, I am talking about practice. Why is the original poster not outraged that Sean Hannity and Rushie and Glenn Beck are not outraged at Imus. BTW I am outraged that there hundreds of thousands of kids living BELOW poverty in this country and I am outraged that Fox News is not reporting on it.

Are you trying to say that if you're a minority you can't be racist?
April 22, 200719 yr WOW, you seem a little misguided to me. Are you trying to say that if you're a minority you can't be racist? If yu read the whole thread, what is say is that you can certainly be biggot. However, if you are not in a position of power your biggotry (if it were directed toward me) has no impact. If, however, you have power then your biggotry can be manifested in racism and discrimination.
April 22, 200719 yr Then I would put it to you that because of Sharpton and Jackson's positions that have been granted to them by the media they do indeed have power over public opinion so therefore their attacks are examples of racism. The same holds true for the likes of Louis Farakhan(sp.). It's a given that thay are bigots. 1 : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race I would also put to you that by the definition that you supplied that Sharpton and Jackson believe in the superiority of their race as well as their obvious belief that all whites are inherently evil and "out to get" blacks, then by your definition they are racists.

I would say that the two of those gentlemen do wield some power and certainly could practice racism, especially in their businesses. However, most of their power only comes when the public agrees with one of their "crusades" and exerts pressure. Mostly I would say that you have attributed ideas and notions to them that are simply your guess based on what you have inferred from their actions and has no real basis in fact.
April 22, 200719 yr So one's actions gives no indications of their "ideas or notions"? I humbly disagree. In fact I would go so far as to say that someone who holds that Sharpton and Jackson aren't racists espousing a belief that has no real basis in fact based on solely the two "gentlemen's actions in the past.
April 23, 200719 yr If the victims had been African American and the subjects Caucasin, THIS ABSOLUTELY WOULD HAVE BEEN CLASSIFIED A HATE CRIME, by the Revs. As it is it was a horiible crime perpetrated by at least a couple of "repeat felony" offenders. As for my thoughts on Imus, he got what he deserved. If he had went on the national air waves and made a remark like this about a group that included my daughter, I absolutely would have wanted him fired as well. Or maybe ten minutes in an elevator alone with the creep. The Imus thing is not a black / white issue it is a stupid old man issue.

They all say those same remarks in almost their songs, and they do it on the "public" air waves as well.
