I would not have any problem with J. Pelphrey being the next coach. He is a guy that does things the right way, is a great family man and understands what it really means to wear KENTUCKY across the front of your jersey.

I would love to see JP get a chance. Kentucky is a basketball state and consistently produces D1 level talent. TN and Vandy prospered with KY players and Xavier also had a Ky player contribute in the NCAA. I know you can't field an entire team from KY but I would like to see more of our talent stay in state and play for the 'Cats. I know that JP would keep that talent at home, playing for the blue and white.

I say if Gillispie says no, Few gets the next look. He won't come IMO, so Pelphrey is the next best option IMO. Does that sound like an upgrade to anyone?

Florida had nothing to lose when they hired Donavon. The program was going no where. He had no pressure on him. Look what happened to Matt Daughtery at UNC. He won at ND with no pressure and was run out of town when he went to UNC. Pelphrey would immedately be put under the same pressure. I personally dont think he is ready for it.

Pelphrey coached under Donovan so they have the same exact style of play...Why not get him at this point...

He would not be a good fit for Kentucky. No doubt he loves UK and as a player had a memorable career but I just don't think he has enough big time experience as a coach to be the next UK basketball coach.

Billy Donovan was 29 when named the head coach at Marshall. He had played and then served as an assistant for Rick Pitino and had no previous head coaching experience.

John Leslie Pelphrey is about 36 years old. He played for Rick Pitino and served as an assistant for Billy Donovan who played and coached with Rick Pitino. He has served as a head coach at South Alabama for a few years now.

What is the difference between his preparedness and Billy Donovan's when he began at Marshall and even when he was named Florida's head coach? The answer is that Billy Donovan was probably less prepared than John Pelphrey when he took the Florida job.

The same argument could be made for Travis Ford.

Tubby coached under Pitino.....Do they have the same style?

But I have seen Pelphrey's team play and they ran up and down the court on WKU...SO yes they do have the same style...

You're comparing Florida 11 years ago to UK.....As GT said in another thread, neither of these guys will get the 9 year "training" on the job that Billy D. had at Florida.

Pelphrey is my second choice behind Gillespie. I have said for years that I hoped he would be the coach after Tubby left. The problem with that now is that Tubby was chased from Lexington a few years to soon.

A big difference to me is that at Marshall, Billy D won 64% of his games, while at South Alabama John Leslie has only won about 54% of his games. Obviously that won't fly at UK with 76% already being established as the benchmark for not being good enough.

As I've posted before, people were saying the same thing about Donovan(except it was he was an assistant at UK) 10 years ago. I believe Pelphrey could bring back the excitement to UK basketball.

I think a guy like Pelphrey would be given the necessary leeway to get his system in order because of his "beloved" status. And the bottom line is this: Who else (other than Ford) would be afforded this kind of patience? Whether reasonable UK fans want to admit it or not, the Unreasonables would've expected Donovan and just about any other coach to secure a final four berth in ... well ... immediately.

I've talked to John a few times, and have observed his teams from afar. I've been impressed. UK fans would love his style. His passion for and knowledge of the program — and all of the fans' idiosyncrasies — means he won't be blindsided and gradually brought down by the looneys who have had TCP on full-meltdown lately.

At this point, with the way the worst of the worst among UK fans, the Unreasonables — and they do deserve to be named, just like some of your past teams — no coach without UK ties seems to want to come to Lex. And who could blame them?

Pelphrey, on the other hand, could sell the impressive UK tradition like no other coach you guys have ever had. His youth and enthusiasm would do wonders for you guys, IMO.
