Exactly. Statiscally Hall was more successful than Tubby and he still could not satisfy the fans. A national title, runner up and he won the NIT when it was very competitive.

THE PAST IS GONE, ... let's move on and live in the PRESENT.

 

1. The SEC is not a one trick pony anymore. The East had 3 teams in the Sweet 16 (that is nearly 20%) from 1/2 of the conference!

2. UF is defending their 2006 National Championship tonight!!! They lost a few consecutive SEC games as well this season.

3. Vandy had one of their best seasons EVER!!!

4. UK plays more regular season games now then they used to in the past. I remember when they only played around 22-25 games per regular season. Tubby averaged 26 wins per season during his 10 years at UK.

5. 27 different teams have made final 4 in the last decade (UK being one of them BTW), and that is the MOST different teams to do that EVER. The game has changed my friend!

 

The only way that many UK fans will be happy is when the rest of the conference is weaker and UK is on top of a mediocre conference.

 

I realize that it was time for Tubby to go for his own emotional well being. I wish him the best and hope he finds happiness in Gopher land. I wish him the best! Thanks for the title OTS!

 

I REALLY hope that the new coach is Donovan. If not, a lot of UK fans will be crying and screaming for Mitch's job, even if he offered him more money than any college coach in America, it will be his fault.

I was around during the Hall era. The heat he took was not as bad as what Tubby has taken. The reason is the method these days is much more quick and the advent of internet boards, blogs, instant news/columns, mass media coverage, etc is why it is much more magnified now. I remember when you couldn't watch every UK game on TV and had to listen to the radio (but when UK was on TV, you still listened to Cawood call it and just turned the volume down on the TV).

 

I think 90% is little high on the number of our fellow UK fans understanding parity. I think it is probably about 82%!

Another good post and you again make some very good points, A lot of the posters were not around before the Pitino era and therefore think that R. Pitino invented the game. I try to keep that in mind on some of these posters but just can't all the time.

It's terrible radio and worse TV and if you think ESPN is the best in sports media than so be it, but I have reversed the brainwashing that is ESPN and I find my highlights elsewhere.

Before his success with the OhFours, Billy the Kid was not highly thought of by UK fans. Especially when his number one teams were getting crushed by Louisville and UK, and he was exiting the tournament early except for one year.

Most of Donovans success has come from this one recruiting class. Players make the difference and it was just a few years ago that Donovan said he was going to follow Tubby's recruiting philosophy. The unreasonable fans are the ones that are so short sighted that they cannot remember recent success simply because of a couple of rough years mainly do to issues with players. Azibuike leaving early, Rondo being a head case. Morris and Crawford never wanting to be anywhere but the NBA and not being mature enough to realize that hard work and effort were their tickets to the pros.

 

My point is until last year, very few, but a loud few, wanted Donovan over Smith. And the difference between Donovan's success in the last couple of years and Tubby's hardships is not that great. Players make great coaches and the margin for error in recruiting is razor thin.

You apparently weren't around during the Hall era...He was critisized and scrutinized much more than Tubby ever thought about being....He could recruit okay, but, the knock on him was being a terrible X's and O's coach

and his style of play wasn't exactly exciting to watch...Prior to that, Rupp wasn't exactly on everyones love list...His teams had been gradually going downhill for several years, before he walked away on his own accord, but, don't think there wasn't pressure from above to do so, much like the Tubby situation was...Sutton also had his critics, but, alot of his scrutiny was the drinking issue, that only a few select people knew about and, of course, the magical money package that happened to show up on Chris Mills door, spelled his demise...

 

Many people on here trully believe Tubby was not good for UK any longer, and , maybe he wasn't, but, there's been many disgruntled fans over the years, for many reasons..The above are just a few situations that come to mind. The thing is, the people not old enough to remember these things, can only compare Tubby with the Pitino era, which was probably the pinnacle of UK's history, even counting the Rupp era... These same people are now the ones giving UK the bad name, because there expectations are unrealistic, but, I'm still convinced that 90% of the fanbase understand the parity thing and are really outstanding Uk supporters, regardless...

Well alot of people like their show. I really don't so much but alot of people do. Actually I don't like Greenburg so much but I like Golic alot. Neither one of them would Icall an idiot.

I was at UK during the Hall era. Joe Hall is one of the best people I have ever been associated with. But he was always under the gun. I think the heat from the alums was every bit as bad, but I agree he did not get it from the general public the way Tubby did, for all of the reasons you mention. It is strange. UK always had talent during his time, but everyone said he couldn't coach. Now, Tubby always struggled to get talent, but most would say he was a very good coach.

Imo if Billy D. or anyone else who may be the next coach does not produce a final four within 3 years at the most (probably not that long) there will be a rebirth of bashing and "fire the coach" threads. Like I have said plenty of times before, the bashers are doing more harm than good. I know that they are fans but imo they are fans as long as things are going good. Example, after a cats win this past season they were nowhere to be found and after a loss it was like they were actually enjoying it and the chance to revive the "fire Tubby" chants . Jmo but it is that you are a fan or not and not just when things are going good/winning. I want to win as much and more than anyone, I hate to lose but some of these guys have broken limbs from jumping on and off the bandwagon. If that is their thing, so be it and they have a right but imo they can "not let the bacik door hit em' where the good Lord splt em'" on the way out. U.K., does NOT need that type of fan.

2a)fails miserably as a recruiter

2b)has his son play point guard for a couple of years when his talent level isnt close to being able to do it

3) keeps UK basketball in its present form(winning and image)

4) refuses to change anything

 

IF these happen he may have a problem

Ding, ding, ding..... There will be "fire Donovan threads," but Donovan won't do these things that were glaring failutures of one OTS. That's why it won't be widespread. About half of the 18% will bash him and be upset, and the other half will claim that some external factor kept them from winning. I also think UK under Donovan will put us in the same league as the "elites of college basketball" once again.

Tubby won 27 games a year and was forced out. There's no way around that.

 

 

Actually, that's misleading. He'd have a good year or two and win 30 some games, then barely win 20 for a while, but hey, if you're at a program where winning 20 games isn't acceptable, you're at a pretty good program in my book. :thumb:
