Other than OTS who had terrible recruiting classes and many issues that he never addressed, who have UK fans been overly critical of? The thing about OTS is he wasn't good enough. If he was, people would have loved him. UK is big shoes to fill and his feet apparently weren't big enough.

Imo if Billy D. or anyone else who may be the next coach does not produce a final four within 3 years at the most (probably not that long) there will be a rebirth of bashing and "fire the coach" threads. Like I have said plenty of times before, the bashers are doing more harm than good. I know that they are fans but imo they are fans as long as things are going good. Example, after a cats win this past season they were nowhere to be found and after a loss it was like they were actually enjoying it and the chance to revive the "fire Tubby" chants . Jmo but it is that you are a fan or not and not just when things are going good/winning. I want to win as much and more than anyone, I hate to lose but some of these guys have broken limbs from jumping on and off the bandwagon. If that is their thing, so be it and they have a right but imo they can "not let the bacik door hit em' where the good Lord splt em'" on the way out. U.K., does NOT need that type of fan.

Had UK beaten Florida (heck, even Vandy) you would've seen a lot more action on the threads. However, when UK gets beat by UGA, people are going to talk.

I agree. How are we supposed to get up for wins against teams like those, even the win over Tennessee was tainted since Lofton was not playing that night. UK did not beat a ranked team this year, that is just unacceptable to any fan. Heck, even the 14-14 team Pitino had his first year beat a ranked team. You are exactly right. Had UK beaten Florida, UNC, UCLA or Memphis then there would have been a lot more positive things to say.

Jmo but if he takes the U.K. job only to leave for the NBA after a few years I don't want him in the first place. I think that I remember being through that before with his teacher :sssh: . Imo Donovan woud be the best fit for U.K. right now but I want a long term coach that is a good one and with U.K. for ther long haul. I agree with most of this, but I honestly believe that Tubby Smith is a top-tier coach. I think the problem that most have, including myself, is that he doesn't play a style of play that the UK fans know and love (Kentucky Basketball). The other problem is that the recruiting just wasn't getting it done. We went from Tony Delk's, Ron Mercer's, Antoine Walker's, and Jamal Mashburn's to players that are good, but not All-American types. I still think Tubby is a good coach and a class act, but just not a great fit for UK.

I agree. Tubby is a good person and a very good coach but not what the program needs, IMO. And I believe that had he stayed next season would have been very similar to this one as far as wins and losses go.

We must not have been watching the same segment. I saw them at 6:30 this morning and little MIke said in 4years if they don't win a champioship the fire the coach comments would be everywhere, and I would be astonished if he leaves Florida for Kentucky.

One of them was a little more critical than the other. The big guy, I suppose Golic, actually put a positive spin on Kentucky.

Florida just can't match the fan/media support that UK generates. Not in basketball. No way.

This is his second trip to the championship game, but when I was traveling through Florida (close to Gainesville) on my way to St. Peterburg last Sunday, I had difficulty finding the regional championship game between Florida and Oregon on the radio. We finally located it on an AM station. In Kentucky we would have found it on no less than 10 to 15 stations.

Add to this that the Gators only had an estimated 500 fans in New Orleans for another of their tournament games, and you get the idea. UK, with the type of talent Florida has, would have had 20,000 there.

 

But with all that said, IMO he would be nuts to leave Florida. There's no pressure on him there. He has anything he wants. The court will be named after him. He has already made his legacy.

However, if he is the kind of person who wants a challenge and feels like he can handle it, he will soon be signing a contract with Kentucky....or the NBA.

Maybe so but the average coach only stays with a school for around 10-11 years. Billy D may want a change now that he has accomplished everything he can and tomorrow we may know what he wants. IMO he comes to UK just because it's another top notch school, great fan base, winningest program in the NCAA, he would be #1 in all of Kentucky, and he would get the respect he is deserved because he has a good background resume. But putting that aside there are reasons not to leave also but I shall not mention any of those. In the end he'll do what he wants and what he feels is best for him and his family, I just hope that involves UK!

Donovan will recruit All-Americans, put guys in the pros, run and gun, press, and WIN!!! 3 years and no final 4's won't make anyone want to fire Billy the kid. Most UK fans have wanted him for some time now. The freshman and junior classes (or lack there of) will be TERRIBLE next year unless some players follow the coach. The thing is though is Florida will probably not return much next year. I'd say PP would go to KY if Donovan was there. That would help tremendously. Also, UK's team (guards) would work pretty well under Donovan's system.
