Heard from a reliable source that Fairdale dominated the boards and South Laurel barely got this one. South Laurel must have used some of that veteran experience to win.

They did. Fairdale was all over the boards and got out to about a 7 point lead in the early part of the 4th. Hammonds hurt his shoulder and missed most of the 3rd. Then, as experienced and senior laden teams do, South Laurel came back. They got aggressive on the boards and Profitt hit some big shots. Hammonds and Smith made their free throws down the stretch and forced Fairdale to take some bad shots. Survive and advance..

 

However, Holmes will be a very tough test for them. They are very athletic and will get all over you on defense. If South Laurel plays like they did most of tonight I don't think they can hang with Holmes.

Very correct assessments.

 

Fairdale dominated the glass 36-21. Both teams shot under 40 percent. South forced 16 turnovers while giving it up 10 times. Six of the Bulldog turnovers came in the fourth quarter.

 

For SL, the Big Three came up with the goods when the team needed it most.

 

Proffitt hit a pair of free throws at the end of the third that halted a 9-0 Fairdale run. Then, in the early minutes of the fourth, he hit a pair of clutch threes, the second one capping a 15-4 SL run. He finished with 17 pts/7 rbs.

 

Trey Smith scored 11 of his game-high 21 during the fourth, and he drew fouls No. 3, 4 and 5 on Fairdale's Reggie Smith, who the Cardinals struggled to stop all game (he had 18/9). Trey hit four FTs inside the final minute. The last two came with 13.8 to play putting SL up for good.

 

Trey's work down low also proved to be defensive in nature with him drawing the fifth foul on R. Smith. With their best player unavailable, Fairdale couldn't get a good look on its first attempt to tie it.

 

However, the rebound went out of bounds off South, leaving Fairdale with :00.6 left to try a desperation shot. Jaquan Ransom -- who had already hit three threes earlier -- got free in the left corner off the inbounds pass. But Hammonds came out of nowhere to block it and save the game.

Congrats Laural on a great win. When the Cardinals are eliminated i will root for Laurel:dancingpa

Laurel and Holmes will be a dandy.

Profitt and Smith just refused to lose for the Cards.

The 4th qarter was very exciting. I thought that Fairdale should have tried to get the tempo a faster pace and play more pressure defense. The pace really fit SL. Proffit and Smith played really well.

My bad...South did of course advance....Thats what you get when typing and getting called by wife to "come and get it" supper.....

Had a chance to catch much of this game. South totally got dominated tonight. Fairdale held the lead much of the game then let South back in it when they started making bad decisions with the basketball.

 

Give South credit though. They did what they had to do to win. If they play like that against Holmes though, they won't be fortunate enough to squeak out a win. Profitt was impressive tonight though. Other than that, South was very average.

was not as impressed by SL as I usually am.. the final foul on Smith was iffy at best IMO...
