The Patriots lived up to their preseason billing. Congrats to Lincoln County for winning the Region Championship!

 

 

On a side note: I'm glad I can say that my Raiders beat the Region Champions... at full strength or not.

Lincoln started off as a basketball power going to the Sweet Sixteen in the school's first season (1975) and then again 5 years later (1980) but it has been a 27 year drought since then.

 

The first trip is akin to Mercer County's football team this past season. In that case, 5 county high schools were brought together to form one all-star basketball team.

Congrats to Coach Jackson and the Patriots. They got the job done as the rest of the region is eliminated and pondering next season...the Lincoln County Patriots are the 12th region champs.

The Lincoln Co. Patroits were the better team tonight,Congratulations.

Robert Johnson was a terrific player. He starred at Crab Orchard before the consolidation. Interestingly, in 1980 when they beat Boyle, Tommy Owsley was their best player. Owsley later went on to star at Berea College. He was also from Crab Orchard.

Lincoln was impressive tonight. They did a nice job of taking the ball right at Boyle and the limited offense that plagued Boyle at times this year reared its head again. Lincoln did a nice job of keeping Perrin under control (21 points, 14 boards, but nowhere near the presence he had in earlier meetings). Ryan Young was terrific.

Anyone get the attendance tonight. If Lincoln's gym holds 5000, it had to be over that they were standing 4 deep on one end a couple deep on the other end.

It doesn't hold 5000. I'd say there were 3500 there, though.

'75 was the year McCreary was supposed to win with Stephens as a junior. He missed a big shot at the end where the McCreary people thought he got fouled against Pulaski at PC. Kind of reminiscent of the ending of the West Jess game vs Lincoln. Pulaski had upset Danville in the first round to get to that game. Wasn't Crab Orchard the "Cubs"? Stanford, Waynesburg, Hustonville, Crab Orchard, and who consolodated? One other 12th Region tidbit. Last other team to win region on first consoldated year? Laurel County in '71. Pulaski in '81 and Mercer County '07 missed the boat. It was their turn to consolodate and win the 12th

PS. Stephens McCreary team won it in '76, so don't feel too sorry for him. He was a pretty good player in his own right. If anyone saw him shoot it, they would know what I am talking about.
