March 9, 200719 yr :thumb: :thumb: 00Rocket, you've been around too long. Going on 4 years:thumb: I enjoy the "rent control" I got in when the gettin was good:dancingpa I dont think i could make it through work w/out this lol
March 9, 200719 yr Those two are great....I didn't mean to be negative...I was merely talking about Lonnell DeWalt, Bo Smith, Anthony Wadja (sp?), Micah Johnson, Christian Johnson, Micah Jones, and a couple others...sorry, seriously. You're absolutely right in what you say. UK has had a lot of in-state talent that either 1) doesn't live up to their hype for one reason or another, or 2) can't keep it together off the field so we don't get anything on the field. I would say Micah Jones would be a good example of #1...and DeWalt would be a good example of #2, although we did get a few blocked kicks from him as a freshman. He's one guy that I really wish would have kept it together and developed at UK. Hopefully, the Johnson brothers get past this and don't fall into this group. Especially Micah...we need him to develop and live up to his hype, IMO. For the betterment of our team, and for future recruiting...I can see coaches using that against UK if Johnson bombs...and we have a hard enough time landing guys like that anyway.
March 9, 200719 yr Get in the classroom and get your work done and get your education. Nobody can take that away from you.
March 9, 200719 yr A lot of kids have trouble adjusting to the workload of college academics and college athletics. Shoot, a lot of non-athletes have trouble adjusting from highschool to college academically. I'm not saying anything at all negative about any of the kids. But, could the recent issues just be tied to normal adjustments that need to be made? What kind of academic assistance program does the program have in place to assist the athletes? I know that UL has made huge strides in both the assistance offered to athletes, as well as the academic success of their athletes. There's been a concentrated effort to that end. Not to be redundant, but can anyone answer my question? Getting into the classroom is definitely the key ingredient, but with the demands of being a college level athlete, there has to be support from the program. They miss classes due to travel; there are enormous demands on their time from the program. Does UK have a system in place that works in supporting these kids academically as they become acclimated to the college demands both in the classroom and on the field? If they do, is it as supporting as it could be?
March 9, 200719 yr Yes, they have the CATS Tutorial Program. One of the best in the nation. Players have to be accountable.

Not to get off topic, I wish that UL would make similar efforts for their non-athlete students. I guess it comes down to the fact that a student-athlete makes more money for the university that the average college student. It sounds way harsh I know but lets face it, college athletics is a business, one has to help the investment in these kids, and they pay the way for many other programs.
March 9, 200719 yr The local paper said today that Micah Jones had to quit playing football because of injuries. Brooks said he would stay on scholarship so he could stay in school and get his degree.
March 10, 200719 yr Yes, they have the CATS Tutorial Program. One of the best in the nation. Players have to be accountable. This is obviously not true...or UK needs to make it mandatory..ours was.
March 10, 200719 yr Pretty much all D1 programs have mandatory study tables as well as tutorial assistance. . However these Student-Athletes are adults and have to show up at class, study tables, tutoring and do their own work. With the NCAA tying graduation rates to scholarship numbers this does not bode well for UK.
March 10, 200719 yr Those two are great....I didn't mean to be negative...I was merely talking about Lonnell DeWalt, Bo Smith, Anthony Wadja (sp?), Micah Johnson, Christian Johnson, Micah Jones, and a couple others...sorry, seriously. You are correct. For whatever the reason it seems that the home state kids struggle a little more than others. Aaron Miller also comes to mind. He made the All SEC Freshman Team and then encountered some problems that led to him leaving the program. He is now playing at KCU. Over the years I am sure there have been more.
March 10, 200719 yr The CATS program is mandatory. I know every athlete has at least 1 mandatory trip to the CATS Center each week, and some are required to go more than that. The CATS tutors and coaches can only do so much. The players have to know their responsibilities and be held accountable.
March 10, 200719 yr Wasn't there always issues with Micah Johnson and his grades? ATTITUDE????

If I took the post the wrong way, which apparently I did. I'm sorry as well. DeWalt is the biggest disappointment to me. He had so much potential. Hopefully the Johnson brothers straighten up and it doesn't become a big issue.
