Gregg Doyel vs. Coach K

Featured Replies

Because I get a kick out of a lot of the stupid stuff he writes. Although I will admit to not reading hardly anything about him this season.

That's because he was so good covering college basketball he got a PROMOTION. What a hack...

Him getting a promotion does not make him a genius on college basketball. I am simply stating that guys like that are usually trying to stir trouble and are usually out for blood. You call it being fluffy, but I believe a lot of times coaches get dealt tough situations and make mistakes. Blasting them and calling for them to be fired is usually just a way of trying to draw attention to themselves by putting down someone else.

I've never seen that from Doyel. I have seen him call coaches out on things they need to be called out on. You're acting like 40, 50 and 60 year old men making millions to run mega million dollar cash cows for the state, city and university they represent. If you like living in a kid glove world, so be it. Much like Doyel I'm looking for the TRUTH. Like Leader K it seems you are good with avoiding it...

Why does every thread about a Doyel article turn into somebody, mainly LMB, hating on him? I know a lot of people dont like him, we got that the last 20 times an article of his was posted on here.

Funny stuff right there. Would you call that a stomp? How can anybody not?

Whats weak about me saying that hes just a journalism major who I do not think is anything close than an expert on college basketball?

Look, there are some sports guys I like who I dont think are overly smart or know their stuff that great, but they are funny and entertaining.

Colin Cowherd, makes some good points, some times bad ones, but hes entertaining.

Michael Irvin, the guy is funny and entertaining IMO.

Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon, absolutely great to listen to.

Dan Patrick's show is great IMO. I do find him to be very smart and have good views on a lot of stuff.

Every coach you talk to goes on and on about how good of a coach they think Tubby Smith is. And Bozich thinks he should be fired? Come on, that is weak.

Did you READ the Bozich article? Rick Bozich likes Tubby, and thinks he's a fantastic coach; I think the same thing. It's UK fans that want him gone, and at this point I agree with Bozich- the tide of public opinion has turned badly against Tubby. The best thing for all involved might be for him to move on if things don't get better in the next month. And short of going to the Final Four, that's just a temporary ease of the situation.

If you're going to rag on a consumate professional like Bozich, at least get his take right.

Guys like Bozich is whats wrong with a lot of sports. 2 years removed from having a great season and a Final 4 near miss, and with the prospect of having a much better team next year he says Tubby shouldnt be at UK next year. I believe people are way too quick to jump the gun and want to get rid of coaches.

Should I just copy and paste my previous post?

You're missing the point.

Bozich knows how good Tubby is. He also knows Tubby's flaws, which aren't exactly so secret you can sell them to the Chinese: his recruiting is sub-par for his position, he's disorganized, and he's loyal to a fault. No coach is perfect, but Tubby's flaws have been put under the microscope as even SUPPORTIVE UK fans like some of our moderators on this site have become fed-up with this team. Fans are frustrated, and if Tubby can't or won't change the things fans are frustrated with it might be time to move on.

My opinion is that this Junior class, including Rondo before he left, add up to a bunch of coach killers. That's not (entirely) Tubby's fault. But it doesn't have to be for the situation to become untenable with the fan base, which it's edging towards doing.

If you still disagree, go back through the Bozich article and post the points he makes and refute them. Please pay special attention to the fact that he never states that Tubby should be fired, or that Tubby isn't good enough to coach at UK.

Doyel was on Lance's show discussing the question to Coach K.

He said that he pushed the issue until the summer comment. At that time, he had to decide to be a real jerk instead of the sorta jerk he was at that time for asking the question. He decided to let him off at that point and not push the issue.

Lets just start by saying I do not think Tubby should go somewhere else after the season. And a point I think that Bozich is missing is that if we were to make it to the Sweet 16 this year that would please some fans to do that. But I see UK having a very good season next year and really changing a lot of fan's minds. Obviously some dislike Tubby no matter what.

Except Bozich (and just about everyone else) doesn't think UK will make the Sweet 16. They'd almost certainly have to beat a top-10 team to do it, and so far this season all the evidence says this team just isn't capable of it.

I mean, if your point is that UK might make the Sweet 16, power to you, but I don't think you're going to convince a lot of people at this point.

And I don't care if they sign Patrick Patterson, DeJuan Wheat, Mr. Fantastic and King Kong, as long as the core of this team is the Juniors, I don't see them going anywhere significant.

First off, I dont see the Sweet 16 likely. I do see it very possible and would not surprise me.

And as for next year I see UK having a very good team. Particularly if we get Lucas and Patterson. Patterson would give us 2 guys who can beat and bang and go toe to toe with teams that have big men like Florida does. Also we can give Morris more breaks with quality guys in his place. Lucas gives us another player who can handle the ball, shoot, and make players around him better.

Then there is the sophomore class. Meeks is obviously should build on his good freshman year. I look for Jasper to develop a little bit of an offensive game and become a more consistent defender.

Then there is Stevenson. I think if he can put on another 15 to 20 lbs it will go a long way for him. Hes already very athletic. I see the team being much better next year if things work out like this.

It would surprise the bejeezus out of me.

And you can mention all you want about why UK might be good, but I still remember the threads talking about how 04-05 UK was going to be a title contender. And you know what? They were right. GT and I talked a lot about how if Crawford would live up to his potential, that team had the talent to take it all the way last year. But they didn't. UK has talent this year, too, but are stuck in neutral. I think they will be next year, too, and when these Juniors are gone UK might benefit by addition by subtraction as much as Florida did a year ago. I just wonder if Tubby will be around to reap the benefits.

UNC and Illinois were both better than UK. After that I think UK was right there with Mich St, Arizona, and UL.

As for next year's team I think a big key will be not having to rely so much on Crawford, Bradley, and Morris. And I do see the freshmen getting much better. Obviously I am cautious because we may not get Patterson and Lucas and Morris could possibly leave. But if we do get those 2 and Morris stays, watch out for UK next year.

I'm sorry, I meant threads AFTER 04-05, talking about the next season (which was last year.) There was serious talk of a Final Four PROBABILITY. And the talent was there to justify that talk.

I for one was not 1 of the fans talking about Final 4 probability. I did think we would be a good team last year, but I didnt see us as a Final 4 team. I dont really see how the talent was there. Especially considering we were not going to have Morris. Morris for all of his shortcomings has been better this year.

Now, next year's team is obviously primed to be a whole lot better than last season's if things fall into place. If you don't see that then its useless talking to you about it.
