Could it be argued that Wayne Upset McCreary 3 times this year?

McCReary has an overall record of 20-8, with 8-6 in the Region and 3-4 in District play.

 

Wayne County, won all 3 meetings and 2 at home against MC. Overall WC is 14-16, 9-6 in Region and 5-2 District play.

 

Out of Region opponents, looks formidable on the Wayne County schedule and perhaps indicative, of the overall record.

Okay I would call this a mild upset since Buckhorn lost to Perry County in the regular season, BUT why in the heck has Buckhorn not played their District opponent Hazard?? Please tell us Friday night if you beat the Bulldogs and I believe that would be upset.

The reason Buckhorn and Hazard did not play was because Hazard won the All A and it put them over on their schedule limit. They cancelled their game with Buckhorn until next season. Buckhorn beating PCC was not an upset. Beating them by 33 was the only surprise.

For those of you who do not know, here is a bit of useless information. I did not know this until a couple of years ago.

 

The term "upset" derived from a horse race ( maybe the KY derby) in which a horse named Upset beat a heavily favored horse. The word has been used ever since when the underdog wins a contest.

Upset became the only horse to defeat Man of War in a 1919 race. But then, Man of War wasn't even at the starting line when the race started. It was widely believed that this was where this use of the word "upset" came from until 2002 when a study of the NY Times database found that usage in post-civil war times. It's still a cool story. The odds on Upset were a 100-1. That's what I call a true upset!

Obvious looking at their head to head meetings it would not be considered an upset. However if you take away the head to head meetings the records would have looked like this:

 

McCreary Central 20-5 8-3 in the region

Wayne County 11-16 6-6 in the region

 

 

And if you go on fan expectations: McCreary was expected to be a Regional contender and Wayne was never thought of in that capacity.

Let's look at the Wayne-McCreary situation another way: Maybe the first time they met, when Wayne won by 10 at home, it was an upset. The second time, when Wayne won by 22, at McCreary Central, maybe. But after winning both those games handily, it seems to me that everyone should've expected Wayne to win the third time around, if for no other reason than they have MC's number.

Well if I look at it that way I couldn't call it an upset. Therefore I would have wasted an entire day trying to convince you and Les that it was an upset:D

 

I call it an upset because I am a slow learner. The first game I got to see and it was much closer than the final score indicated. The 2nd I did not see. I heard Wayne shot lights out. But since I didn't see it doesn't count.
