In Cincinnati, Ken Griffey Jr. is considered a hometown product. But that's not really how he thinks of himself. Not anymore.

 

Griffey, as we well know, is a sensitive fellow, and if he now feels alienated from the city where he grew up, it's because, right or wrong, he feels it has alienated him. In recent years, Junior has made a discernible effort to be more open and agreeable with the Cincinnati media. Apparently, though, that feeling of comfort doesn't extend to the town at large.

 

Here's what he told Seattle Post-Intelligencer columnist Jim Moore in a column that ran today:

 

"My home's in Florida. I work in Cincinnati," Griffey said.

 

"But you grew up there," I said. "Cincinnati's your hometown."

 

"My home's in Florida. I work in Cincinnati," Griffey repeated. "That 19-year-old kid who's now 37 has a whole different opinion of people. I work in Cincinnati. That's it."

 

If that's it, that's unfortunate. Maybe the town has been too hard on Griffey. Maybe Griffey has been too hard on himself . . . which, in spite of what he says, makes him a true Cincinnatian.

He's the perfect role model for kids who love the game, and gets treated like garbage from his own fans and media. He deserves better IMO.

What are the local charities set up in Cincinnati by Junior? What has he done since 2000 to be a part of the community? He's a mega star athlete that hasn't lived up to the hype for one reason or another. With that comes criticism. Like it or not, that's the reality of the situation. Poor Junior. Boo hoo...
