2007 Mayfield

Featured Replies

So is Mayfield going with more of a mix-match of QB's this year? I think it could work out well myself, with the Guhy kid coming in and getting in that rotation and getting some experience.

I really don't think so but I have no idea what Coach Joe will do.

The Christian County scrimmage at home is "supposed" to start at 5:30pm...now that will depend on how hot it is next week and whether they move it back to later in the evening.

Will be interesting to see how things shape out with the Cards this year at QB and the line...but should be a fun team to watch this year. Just 14 more days until we get to see the red and black run out of the tunnel at War Memorial and kick things off for real!!!

I could see Mayfield using Walters and Guhy quite a bit in games the Cards have in hand, just to give Armstrong a little breather, late in games. Coach Morris could opt to do the same on the defensive side, especially early in the year when its so hot... Once the weather starts to cool and they get into the tougher games, I think you'll see Armstrong on both sides most of the game...

Thats what I hope, I just hope they get to come in with a 1st string line instead of a second string line. Or coach could substitute a few of the 1st stringers with some second stringers to give them a rest, but a freshman QB needs protection to give him time to make decisions.

I have faith in Coach Joe in that he will bring along the other QB's the right way...especially Guhy since it will be his job starting next year. I am excited about this year's Cards team as we have a good stable of backs, a bigger, although little younger line, and experience in some key spots with Armstrong and Simpkins, along with Pruitt. I am glad to see Jared McQuiston back this year as he could be a bigtime weapon at tight end to go along with Levi at that spot. Should be some fun at ol' War Memorial this season.

Go CARDS!!!

Coach Lawson said that he had enough experienced players back on defense that he could have the starters go for one or two series then put in the other group for a series so that everyone stays fresh.

Everyone on the line but Scott Hayden started games last year for the Cards. Hayden hasn't played football since middle school I believe but it looks like he won the left tackle spot. From what I have seen and heard he is doing a good job.

IMO only two players are solid starters and not in danger of losing their starting spots on the o-line and that is Ethan Kemp and Scott Brimer. The other three are solid players but they will have to play up to expectations or Coach Joe won't hesitate to make a change. There are some big sophomores and freshman chomping at the bit to start for the Cardinals.

Did anyone have a chance to go to the scrimmage down in Milan on Friday? If so how did the Cards look?

I was going to go but was not able to get away from work on time.

Well, you guys might as well go ahead and mail the trophy this year to Beechwood. They way they are talking about the Beechies in their scrimmage thread against Highlands, it is already all over and Mayfield should just go ahead, save their strength, and get ready for basketball season.

Read that myself Hear. Hard to tell if they have any idea what they are talking about or not because they talk that same talk every year. They must be pretty strong though for Guru to be talking it up.

I didnt go but the report I got was that Milan won the scrimmage 3 score to 2. Milan scored the first 2 scores then Mayfield settled down and came back with 2 score of their own. Milan scored the final time on a long pass at the end of the scrimmage. No idea how the 2nd teams did. Seems everyone came away from the scrimmage feeling pretty good about the Cards preformance. Milan is expected to be very good this year. Milan is a sort of Mayfield in W TN.

Hearsay trying to get a rise out of us Card fans...they may be the better team but they will have a 4 hour plus trip over two days to end the Cards season I believe...

The Cards must first let Logan grow into the QB position before I talk smack to the Beechies!

Mayfield started the scrimmage out not so good. The offense couldn't get anything going on the first two drives but they soon settled down. Milan has a very big and fast team and I thought Mayfield played right with them. Milan went ahead 2 touchdowns before Mayfield could get on the board. The offense has some work to do but will be fine once the season gets started. The o-line has to stay with their blocks until they hear the whistle, once they do that the line will be ok. Sophomore Jansen Jones (Micah Jones brother) got the start at left tackle instead of Scott Haden. He will be a good one. Logan Armstrong looked real good and comfortable at QB. He made some good throws on the screen passes and his long throws were right on the money. RB's will Mayfield's strong suit. If Andy is in the backfield then Tyrese lines up in the slot and vice versa.

The defense was good except for a couple of pass plays that the secondary got burnt on. I thought our d-line and linebackers did a good job against the run while taking on a much bigger Milan o-line. Mayfield had good coverage on the pass play that Milan scored on at the end of the scrimmage but the reciever came back to the ball and then beat the defender for the score. Until then Milan couldn't get anything going after their first two scores.

Tommy McNutt was right on the money with his extra points. They didn't let him kick off. He looked good on his punts also except for one.

The JV team scored I think 3 times to Milan's 0. Rump put on a show at RB and I think that he will get plenty of playing time on varsity before the season is over. He just seemed determined not to do down. He never was taken down by one player. The JV o-line looked good also.

Thanks for the info on the scrimmage...it killed me not to go to it...I will be there this Friday for the home scrimmage against Christian County. Will be interesting to see how well the Cards do with a week of practice under their belts from last Fridays scrimmage against Milan.
