The last time Dixie Heights won a varsity football game against Covington Catholic, Heath Ledger, Charlton Heston and Evel Knievel were all still alive and the High School Musical 2 soundtrack was the #1 selling album in the US. With that game taking place 19 years ago, it's also entirely possible (likely?) that there aren't any current players on the football teams from either school who were even alive yet when the Red Colonels last won the Battle for Colonel Highway.

Currently in his 12th season as head football coach at Cov Cath, Eddie Eviston has notched 11 straight wins over Dixie Heights, averaging 40.0 points per game to Dixie's average of 12.27 points per game over the same period. Dixie head coach Pat Burke, currently in his 4th season on the job in Edgewood, is 0-3 against Cov Cath.

An interesting piece of trivia for the week: As a 2005 Covington Catholic grad, Pat Burke has never been a part of the victorious team in the Dixie/Cov Cath varsity football series. During Burke's sophomore, junior, and senior years Covington Catholic, Dixie won 3 straight games over Cov Cath....the only time in 52 total games played in the series that Dixie has notched three-straight wins.

Cov Cath comes into this week's game with a 2-1 record, with big wins over their first two Kentucky opponent and a big loss to their one out-of-state opponent. They beat Ryle 50-6 in Week 1, lost 56-20 to Elder (OH) in Week 2, and beat Simon Kenton 42-7 this past Friday. With a significant number of new starters on the scene, the team appears to be developing well, with junior QB Dylan Courtney averaging 217 yards passing per game, Kiyan Miller averaging over 80 yards rushing per game, and Jason Fedor averaging over 65 yards receiving per game. Miller's and Fedor's numbers are all the more impressive when you add in the sheer number of skills players that Cov Cath has had with their hands on the ball this year - 11 total rushers, 9 different receivers, and a total of 6 different players with touchdowns thus far in the course of 3 games played.

Dixie comes into this week's game with a 0-3 record on the season, beginning with a 42-13 loss to Simon Kenton in Week 1, then a 42-13 loss to Badin (OH), and a 41-3 loss to Beechwood this past Friday. Thus far in the season offensive production has been a real problem for the Red Colonels, who with a combined 212 total yards offense in their first two games. With 6 touchdowns allowed per game on the defensive side of things, there's a lot for the team to improve upon all around.

So...what are your predictions for this week? Should fans on either side be thinking about "the transitive property of football scores" with Dixie losing to Simon Kenton by 29 and Simon Kenton losing to Cov Cath by 35?

Hey @Colonels_Wear_Blue do you know what the unofficial single season sack record is for the good guys? It's not listed on the Cov Cath website but I think Jonny Lind is going to make a run at that this year.

CovCath is too much. Dixie just needs to focus on staying healthy and competing as hard as they can for 4 quarters!

Cov Cath will clock Dixie, maybe even in the first half. I agree with you that Dixie just needs to stay healthy in this game. With 5A having a really down year, Dixie actually has a shot to win their district.

It's all superfluous, but a little bit of a Covington Catholic football record book history lesson:

Some years ago I sat down and talked record book with longtime Lynn Ray assistant coach, Tim Hobbs. Hobbs was the one who first compiled the football record book back in the early 1980s. So Coach Ray started coaching at Bryan Station in 1970 under former Cov Cath head coach Tony Lanham. He moved back up to NKY and ended up coaching as an assistant for a year at Lloyd Memorial where he met fellow Lloyd assistant coach Tim Hobbs. The following year when Fred Bernier took over as HFC at Cov Cath, Coach Ray followed the advice of his former boss (and former Cov Cath HFC) Tony Lanham and accepted the job as Coach Bernier's DC, and Hobbs went to Cov Cath with Coach Ray.

Bernier left Cov Cath following the 1974 season to become an assistant coach under Owen Hauck at Boone County and Coach Ray took over as HFC at Cov Cath, with Hobbs becoming his OC. Fast-forward a few years to the 1977 football season. Doc Brueggemann's son Mark arrived at Cov Cath as a freshman and was clearly a very talented running back. Coach Hobbs pulled Brueggemann up to play varsity tailback as a freshman, playing as a compliment in the backfield to fullback Gary Hebbeler, a junior. By the time Brueggemann's senior season rolled around in 1980, his four years as a varsity starter made him a clear owner of the "all-time leading rusher" title in the history of Cov Cath's football program, based on common knowledge. In the football program's earliest years there were 2 and 3 running backs sharing rushing duties each season, and in the remaining years prior to Brueggemann's arrival the program hadn't had had any offensive units successful enough to produce the kind of rushing yardage that Brueggemann had gotten. So that was how the first football record at Cov Cath was officially created.

Two years later in 1982, with a football statistician officially on the scene for Cov Cath, senior defensive lineman Paul Gallenstein was having a banner year tallying tackles for loss. Toward the end of the season the discussion that "surely Gallenstein's TFL numbers must be a program record" started coming up frequently. Without having hard data to backup the record there wasn't a sure way to tell, but Coach Hobbs took that on as a personal challenge. Former Cov Cath HFC Rudy Tassini had re-joined the faculty at Cov Cath that year and was now an assistant on Coach Ray's football coaching staff. Hobbs had a sit-down with Tassini and then arranged for a sit-down with former Cov Cath HFC Fred Bernier, and with the help of Kentucky Post sports writer (and Cov Cath graduate) Terry Boehmker the group felt confident in establishing that, despite lacking a complete accountancy of all previous players' TFL figures, Paul Gallenstein's 32 tackles for loss that season was, in fact, a single-season record for the Covington Catholic program. Gallenstein's record is still standing, and is currently the oldest standing single-season football record at Cov Cath by 15 years.

The Cov Cath football record book has been kept continuously since it was first compiled at the end of the 1982 season. Interestingly enough, this past summer I came across Courier-Journal and Enquirer newspaper articles from the 1972 football season mentioning how Cov Cath defensive back Bill Holocher had pulled down 4 interceptions in a game against Trinity. (One article noted that Holocher also had a 5th interception in the game. However, when a Cov Cath player was called for offensive holding on Holocher's return following the INT - despite arguments from the Cov Cath sideline - officials inexplicably decided that Trinity would be given the ball back due to the penalty and the Rocks were able to re-play the down.) Anyway, the Cov Cath record book had the single-game interception record listed as being set at 4 by Jim Schwartz against Holmes in 1983, and I was able to get the record book updated to have Holocher & Schwartz shown as co-owners of the single-game interception record.

That said, the current defensive records that aren't tracked at Cov Cath are:
