Paducah Tilghman hires Sean Thompson as Interim Head Basketball Coach

Featured Replies

Yes, that Sean Thompson.  I am hearing that there were several coaches that expressed interest but several offers that PT made were turned down.  The Tornado was faced with either settling for their 5th or 6th choice or name an interim and start searching for the 27-28 season.
Coach Thompson is not new to coaching basketball.  The key thing will be to get some solid Assistants that can lead the team in the preseason while football is still going on.

This is certainly a different approach.

This just smells bad. Getting the basketball team organized and ready will be right when he needs to focus on getting the football team playoff ready. Not a good situation for either squad. I'm not saying Coach Thompson can't do it, but the basketball program has struggled for far too long to do something like this.

Definitely smells bad. So an incoming junior this year will have their third coach in three years and then their senior year will have another new coach.

It has to be hard for a football coach to do both especially with a football team that usually makes a deep run into the playoffs.

Hopefully Coach Thompson can find good assistants. It definitely will test his delegating skills. Having his son on the roster will help the transition.

Coach Thompson's results speak for themselves. But this will be tough and would be for any coach anywhere in the state to do. Nonetheless do it at a place like PT where expectations are high.

I do think it will be a tough assignment for Coach Thompson, juggling both basketball and football. However, what is the ceiling for next year's PT team? My way too early guess would be hoping to draw opposite of Marshall County and possibly make the regional finals. I don't see them overtaking the defending region champs. So, while the hire seems weird/odd I think they punch right at their weight class with Coach Thompson. I am wondering why the decision was made to hire him on the interim basis especially when it seemed there wasn't any shortage of interest.

Basketball and Football Head Coach at a school that size? Strange indeed.

They speak for themselves on the football field.

It was almost 100 years ago, but Blanton Collier was both the head football and head basketball coach at Paris HS during the 1930s. He turned out pretty good. ? ?
