Franklin-Simpson is proud to announce the hiring of Will McCoy as our new boys head basketball coach. McCoy comes to FSHS after serving as head coach at Greenwood High School where he amassed 121 wins in those seven seasons and was recently named the 2026 KABC 4th Region Coach of The Year. There will be a press conference on Monday, April 27 at 11:00 AM in the FSHS Performing Arts Center to introduce Coach McCoy.

Had some pretty solid Greenwood teams that I think got overshadowed by the fact BG and Central own the 14th district. I like the hire and think it will be a positive reset for the program! Coach Taylor has the girls program operating at a high level, hope to see Coach McCoy do the same for the boys!

I have been following the Wildcats, for sometime. I am hoping coach McCoy, will have his teams in the conversation to contend in the 4th region.

Absolutely hate to lose him at Greenwood, but totally understand it.

It depends on the metric you're measuring by IMO. Since Lovan graduated in 2017, I would say Greenwood has typically had the edge in talent.  I rather expect that to continue in most years.  Greenwood is just significantly larger, and continuing to grow.  They're just a shade under 300 males larger on average (69% larger than FS) - basically a 2A school larger.  

But that talent gap doesn't matter if you can't get to region.  McCoy got there only one time at Greenwood.  Greenwood has only been three times in 18 years. They got to the region finals in 2021 under McCoy, so it falls under the "if you can get out of the 14th you can win it" category, but still, they struggle to make it often.  I'd say that McCoy's best two teams were 2022 and 2026 - neither got out of the district tournament. Franklin-Simpson, while having little success of late when making it, has made region 15 times in the last 18 years.  The 13th District is simply just a much, much easier animal to tame.  And the Wildcats are not bereft of talent, they just don't have as much consistently as the larger Bowling Green schools.  It's not hard to see the thinking that he can more often make a consistent run coaching them up, taking advantage of the high talent years, and see where he can get.

I think McCoy was simply done with dealing with Warren County on top of any other ancillary factors.  It is within McCoy's control to not have to see Warren Central outside of a region tournament if he is inclined.  Franklin-Simpson did not have Warren Central on the schedule last year.  I believe I'd already heard that they weren't on the schedule this year, even before McCoy was hired.  The former district foes met every single year from Warren Central's founding in 1968/69 through the 09/10 season.  There have been four years since that they haven't played and I'd expect that it will be that way moving forward for at least a while.

Lots of “taking my ball and going somewhere else” happening in Warren County these past few years.

It was just a matter of time. From what I understood, it would’ve happened last year under the right circumstances.

To me it's pretty simple, position yourself to get to the regional tournament easier.  Once you get there, albeit a long shot you have a shot.
