I agree. They were inconsistent this past year but when they were at their best they could have competed with anyone in the region. Great year to build off of.

Also, this region is at its absolute best when you have three team races (at least) in each district. We could be getting close to that next year but it would require major moves forward by East and especially Mercer.

This is not a knock on Seneca Driver or any other high profile kid going off to a high major college early BUT:

I would GUESS in 30 years the people that do that will look back and regret it. You only get to go through High School once and giving up on Prom, Senior year Basketball, Graduation etc are things that money can’t replace.

I don't disagree that the region is at its best with three team races in each district but after looking at the districts we have some districts with pretty weak teams.  The 46th has Burgin, Trinity and Mercer and until Mercer rebuilds it will be down to East and West Jessamine.  

A quick look at the 48th and there are 3 teams who were decent this year but took major hits from graduation.  I have a feeling the entire region is going to be way down next year.

I'm pretty sure Quisenberry and Zeismer both enrolled early and both came back to graduation.

It may not be a factor but they are eligible for NIL money once they enroll in college.  According to ChatGPT the extra few months for a top recruit averages to somewhere between 50-200k.  Factor that in along with giving yourself a better opportunity to see playing time the next fall and it's a pretty powerful temptation.

I went down a rabbit hole after reading this, and really wanted to dig into the numbers to do a breakdown of the last 4 seasons in this region.  As expected, the 45th and 48th districts were the closest to having three team races on average.  There have been 8 programs in our region that have carried above .500 records for this duration, and I think that speaks to the overall parity excluding DCA and Pulaski Co. for this time period who have been the top two programs with each winning 2 Regional Championships.  Hope some of my fellow number nerds enjoy this for some off-season reading.

With Mercer Co. being open, I think it still shows its a top tier job that just went through a downturn this past season.

I do think the Win Percentage represents the best programs year in year out recently.  DCA, Pulaski Co., Somerset, Wayne Co. and Lincoln Co. being the top 5.  West Jessamine and Boyle Co. right behind it.  Boyle Co. would be the slow starter of the region because of football.  They have usually finished strong, and have had postseason success winning 2 district championships.  

I think there will probably be even more parity in the upcoming year than this year. Obviously, with as much talent as the 12th is losing to graduation, there is a lot of room for players to step up. To me, how players make a jump/improve from one year to the next is one of the most exciting things about high school basketball.

Wayne's core seniors-to-be have played together since grade school. I'm hearing that Korbyn Edwards and Ryder Bell are healing great. Edwards and Bell are both hard-nosed guys that know how to compete. Simply HAVE to get Edwards through football and Bell through XC with no injuries. Brice Lafevers will be undersized down low as far as height but he is football strong and can move people around. He tends to fall in love with the perimeter game if he hits a couple outside shots which really isn't his strong suit. Mostly following Wayne, of course I'm biased, but Rylan Morgan could probably be in the discussion for most improved player in the 12th region this year. Can finish left or right, not prone to turnovers and defends pretty well. He needs to be more consistent from beyond the arc for his senior year. It will be interesting to see what Parmley does at point with a 3yr starter in Edwards coming back and a 6'3"-4" kid that fell into the role pretty well while Edwards was out. Brody Askins will be another senior but he saw limited time in varsity. Ultimate "team" guy. Landon Fields is listed on the roster as a FR but if I'm not mistaken, he will be a senior as well. Big football body that saw limited time in JV.

Juniors to be Cade Sharp, Dawson Crouch and Grayson Simmons could each step-up next year with strong work in the off season. Sharp can get hot from 3 at times and got some dunks down in some JV games. Crouch is about 6'6" and is a lefty and moves well. Can dunk with ease. He seems to just need some more confidence and more aggressiveness. Could he help fill the Farmer void? Simmons is another big football kid that sometimes looks like a bull in a china shop but he's tough.

Sophomore to be Kooper Gehring had a solid year starting most games. Smart player that can fill it up when he gets hot and often times had the task of guarding the other team's best guard. Needs to continue to get stronger. Tate Bertram saw limited varsity time but had a very good JV year. On the small side but can get to the basket and shoots the ball well. Teddy Simmons is also in this class and is just a tough hard-nosed kid that leaves it all on the floor. Really only saw JV time this year. I'm sure I left some players out and I don't know a whole lot about players in the classes below this class.

The worst kept secret around Wayne County basketball the last few years was that Phillips was to go after the all-time scoring title and score over 3K points. (Personally, I think this was Woods' idea when Phillips was in grade school) There should be plenty of extra shots to go around next year. A lot of these guys I mentioned in this post should be licking their chops and working like crazy this off season.

I like the Cards returning roster.  I’m with you on Morgan.  He had a great season running the PG spot.  Edwards has always been a ball dominant guard, so will be interesting to see how that shakes out.  Never can have too many ball handlers on the floor.
