Mike Yeagle: Beechwood at Paris, November 1993 or 1994.... Lockerroom

Featured Replies

We are getting ready to play the Beechwood Tigers one night.. either 1993 (round 2) or 1994(Quarterfinals). Greg Hergott is their QB (in my opinion, best Tiger, ever). Both games at Paris.

The Visitor's lockerroom is pretty nice, especially for the early 90's. Closer to the gamefield than the home lockerroom.

But, Mike Yeagle comes out of that lockerroom , loud. Angry. Says that we have turned up the heat, full blast, to make them hot/uncomfortable.

At the time, I was mad(at us) that we had let that happen, thought someone had screwed up. In hindsight, I always wondered if Mike created something to get his guys going. They were big favorites both times. We played them tough in 1993. Lost both. 1994 was ugly.

I am/was a big Mike Yeagle fan. He was always super to me when I became a head coach, willing to answer questions, share video, etc. And, during that time, formations were a great indicator of what a team was going to run on offense. Not with Mike. He could attack the full field, horizontally and vertically, regardless of the formation.

When you make your opponent mad because the lockerroom is too warm in November, that is a problem you don't prepare for. ?

I'd like to see what Yeagle would have done if LCA tried to lock his team out of the visitor's locker room.

I can see it now....

He was hilarious as an opposing baseball coach bc you could hear everything. His sarcasm was epic.

Early 90's when I was at Paris, in addition to Mike Yeagle at Beechwood, Bob Schneider was at NewCath, Dan Ridder at Dayton, Charlie Coleman at Bellevue & Rudy Tassini at Lloyd. Excellent football coaches with tough, hard-nosed football teams. Huge challenge for a young coach and I had to grow up quick. Fortunately, we had good players. It was a great experience to learn and grow for a young head coach. It was tough but I had a blast in November when we would play those guys.

My Freshman year you guys beat us in the second round. I’ll never forget the last name Dumphord. That guy could fly.

Thank you for this @Three Blind Mice I'm not sure how, but I forgot about he would almost jokingly yell at us like that (with sarcasm as you perfectly stated) when we were on the bases & he was coaching at third. I had at least several of those directed at me, so when I read your post I immediately heard his voice in my head and got a good laugh. We were blessed to have him as our football & baseball coach, to say the very least. Thanks again!

Pretty sure you were on first base when he did it, LOL

You just rattled off some legendary coaches…all in the same district.
NewCath LOATHED Beechwood and the feeling was mutual. That entire district was LOADED with players at each school, for years in the 90’s. Kinda crazy since it was a single A district.

We just couldn't get past Beechwood in the playoffs.  '91, no chance.  '92 NewCath was the better overall team, just didn't get it done.  '93 Again, better team, Beechwood won the game that mattered after losing the district to us.  '94 no chance.  '95 we had them and then it rained...I feel we were a better match up against Mayfield.  '96-'99 we didn't play in the playoffs and offered zero resistance in the regular season.

'00 is when the rivalry really started.  Before that, it was rivalry in the same vein as Steelers - Bengals.  We thought it was a rivalry, they didn't.

Just think of the possibilities if KY had RPI back in early 90’s

Both teams could have met in the State finals instead of Regional finals as both teams were perennially in the top 10 in NKY regardless of class.

Beechwood repped out Region very well back then…too well if you ask me…? #Respect Yeagle was the man during that span.

I was on the 91’ 92’ & 93’ teams. Started both ways all 3 years. Loved playing NCC and Lloyd! Epic battles with plenty of ? talking! As far as Paris, I remember this well! They did blast the heat and ? in the toilets without flushing them if I remember correctly. I also remember they had a great ? talker as well. I believe 92’ was his senior year! Yeagle was fired up! Can’t say this was the worst I had seen him fired up because he was like that most of the time. His pre-game speeches were EPIC!!! He’d make you want to run over your own Mother if she is standing in the way!

RIP the the GOAT! “Iron” Mike Yeagle!

The 1992 playoff game was complete domination by Beechwood, 38-13, so not sure how NCC was the better team. 1993 playoff game was won 15-6 by Beechwood in a cow pasture at Newport, and Beechwood held a 12-1 series advantage over NCC in the 90’s.

The series was owned by Beechwood in the 90’s, outside of the regular season loss to NCC in 93.

That’s exactly what I said, not a rivalry. That said…The cow pasture…stop. Neport was fine.  NewCath fumbled 3 times inside the 5 in the regular season in 92. It was the one year in the 90s that they had the size advantage over Beechwood and, after Berger, NewCath had the next 4 best skill players. Those two years Yeagle was the difference.
