Marshall County travels to Owensboro in a district showdown. Marshall is 1-1 in district play and 3-3 overall. Owensboro is 2-0 in district play and 4-2 overall.

Marshall County Wins: Crittenden Co, Trigg Co. Muhlenberg Co.  Losses: Caldwell Co., Murray, Madisonville

Owensboro Wins: Daviess Co, Owensboro Catholic, Graves Co., Apollo

At least Marshall beat Muhlenberg County, so they won't be last in the district, but they won't go to the playoffs either.

Marshall inexplicably took Owenboro the distance last year. O still won, but it was a MUCH tighter affair than it should've been.

Yeah, I don't think this year's gonna even be close.

Last years game was one of the weird off night games for the Devils, and it ended up staying close. I don’t see the same happening this year at home. Running clock at some point for the guys in Red.

I don’t know what Marshall has - they are a very talented hitch school in a number of sports!  No reason why they shouldn’t field a very good football team.  That said, even though this is the game before FALL Break, O will not mess this up.  Another running clock for O.  I think Bryant, Morris, Fountain, others all get a lot more catches this week - get the ball to these guys some this week - very talented WR’s.

Only disagree with this because watching teams in our 3rd region area like Muhlenberg, Ohio Co. and even some Owensboro schools kids are being told not to play football at these schools because they think basketball is where it's at. We still have this in the Owensboro/3rd Region Area. So I wouldn't say "they should field a good team" especially if administration and coaches are promoting not to play football. If this is the case and we still live in the "Kentucky is a basketball state", while only maybe 1-2 kids from Kentucky play basketball at UL or UK. Kentucky is actually ranked 29th in basketball recruiting. Far from the basketball state it use to be.

Good points - I don’t know about this - too far removed from high school sports now.  I’d say you are much closer to it and understand the issue. I see what you are saying and if that’s the case, that sucks for Marshall County.

If kids are being told by a coach to not play other sports and only play 1 then that is a coach who does not have the best interest in mind for the player and the administration should fire that coach.  There is no problem with athletes playing multiple sports but it takes and entire athletic department and coaches working together.  It also requires athletes to be committed to training in the weight room while in season.  Athletes who play football and basketball typically struggle with this because most basketball coaches don't believe in the weight room.  Kids are going from football in July to November and then rolling straight into basketball until March then they turn around and play another 25 games in June which is ignorant if you ask me so there is no time for the weight room and agility training unless the athletes commit to doing it in season.  Again it can be done but not when you have adults that won't share athletes and won't commit to getting them in the weight room.

I am in 100% agreeance with you. The issue is not this, but it's a longtime silent rule that you hear from admin from other surrounding counties in the Owensboro area. A high school coach a few years back told me that administrators would always say  "Coach Make sure you play em all"........ then silently add except football.

It happens in our area ALOT. This is a reason we do not live in Ohio Co anymore and my kids go to Owensboro. It's a FOOTBALL school.

Well a lot of the issues in the rural county schools is there are not an abundance of skilled athletes so in order to build a competitive football team to complete with the schools that have athletes you must make sure that you get multiple sport kids out to play.  If the admin won't support that and the coaches won't work together then you better get the Wing-T or Triple Option installed.

Marshall County has always been a basketball school.  Marshall has amazing facilities for all sports but you can tell the emphasis on basketball by the Gym and Aux. Gym.   I graduated from MC in the late 90s and we were very successful, and it was running a 2 tight Wishbone with backs that ran about 4.9 and an OL that avg 6'3 and about 275.  The most successful teams in school history were big, slow and hard nosed.  One other thing that hinders MC are the parents.  they do not have any realism what so ever when it comes to their little johnny's talent and capabilities.  This is seen 2 fold.... 1) Little Johnny is 5'8 and runs a 5.1 and momma is certain that he will go to UK to play basketball, and because of this certainty there is ZERO possibility he will play football because he might get hurt and lose his ride to UK.  2) Little Johnny is 6' and runs 5.2 forty and his daddy has coached him since little league and Johnny needs to be in the slot or running back position, and the dad has some clout in the boosters.  Thus pressuring the HC to play Johnny out of position which hurts the whole team.   There have been 2 very successful coaches at MC,   Jim Shelton who was a my way or the highway guy, and took zero GUFF from anyone.  He had tremendous support in the building and at the district level, but was undone when a homegrown lady got the principalship and had an axe to grind and forced Jim out.   The other was Mike Lawson.  He came along with a similar attitude, running a spread offense and more modern 4-4 defense.  He was fortunate to catch 5 years of great talent at MC before he left to return closer to home and take the Central Hardin Position in 2008ish.   Anyhow, I am not sure how much support Coach Bloodworth and his staff has or if he is tough enough to make the program his by keeping out the noise from parents and boosters.

YIKES!!! That sounds exactly what I was talking about at the County schools near Owensboro. Ohio, Muhlenberg, Hancock, McLean are all going to the Sweet 16 basketball tournament. LOL!

The Round Ball Dellusional Parent Syndrome is REAL in KY!  I read somewhere, that the most common profession chosen by 7th grade boys in Kentucky is NBA player.  Well that's what they think!   I coached for several years, and it always amazed me at how unrealistic kids and their parents were about what it takes to make it to the collegiate level in any sport, nonetheless basketball.   It is sad to hear that the same "problem" is rampant in rural schools.   What is a solution?  I mean hey 12 scholarships for basketball, 55 for football should be a good sign for folks but they can't get it.   I will also throw in that the 4th string DT could be a starting OG in most places too HAHAHA

I feel like this is a problem at other schools when it comes to football though. There are very few football scholarships given to kids coming out of the city of Owensboro but kids who are good at baseball will consistently give it up to chase a football dream that is probably less likely than that basketball scholarship.
