100% correct, which is why it’s confusing. The idea behind it is safety. Don’t want the hurdler to get his legs taken out and land in their head or neck.

Pretty confident the Cooper defender lucked out by T-LO hurdling him. If Lorenzen stays grounded it's not going to end well. I will take Lorenzen 10/10 on that Defender if he stays Vertical as the rule states. Not even a discussion and probably was safer if that makes sense.

I believe the rule was originally added to stop the hurdle on extra point attempts and field goals to enhance the chance of blocking the kick and as a safety issue for the defender doing the hurdle.  The rule does apply to running backs who hurdle the defender unless as has been said if the tackler is on the ground.  In the photo the tackler is close to being on the ground but there is daylight under his right knee, so you could say the call was missed or the runner was allowed to proceed. A defensive back when facing a larger running back will many times go low for obvious reasons. There are several penalized infractions in the rule book which are judgement calls, and this is probably one of them.  You don't see it called much, and so it goes into the group of judgment calls like pass interference, which in High School does not have the uncatchable rule, therefore if the ball is still in the air you cannot interfere with the receiver.

Finally got around to watching the game this morning. I’d have to agree that the ball carrier went up vertically, which is legal, vs hurdling which is not. Again how many times have any of us seen that called in a varsity contest. So my take from the still frame was wrong in my opinion. A still frame doesn’t tell the whole story.

It was called on Highlands Adam Surrey a couple times the past two years . One of them being in the state Semis in 2023 against Cooper on huge critical play and it really hurt the birds in that game.

One thing that I’ve noticed in the first two weeks is a shift in pass interference calls. Not sure if it was even a focus but defenders seem to have more freedom in coverage as far as physicality. Aside from the obvious pass interferences I’m a fan of this personally. Receivers have had to be way more physical in highlands first two games , I watched John F. #9  Get completely ran out of bounce last week on a route and nothing was called. I hope it’s consistent moving forward and receivers can adjust. There’s also the worst flag in all of football in my opinion , where the ball is way underthrown and the receiver has to comeback for the ball , crossing the defenders pass. It’s a major bail out play in my opinion and rewards a bad play on the offense far too often. This happened once last week in the game and the ref held on to the flag. I’m a fan of that even when it doesn’t go our way .

That still frame looks crazy. Tayden made it look so natural in live motion. Pretty sure he is still only 15. Crazy. Can you imagine if he were only a sophomore.
