Looking at their schedule, it is possible and seems kind of scary.

The Panthers started the season with a one-side loss to CAL 45-7 and looked like they had trouble moving the ball and definitely had trouble defending the pass and the run.  Not a good sign.

This week, the Panthers play Cabell-Midland (WV) a very large school that sometimes has really good talent, but other times underperforms.  The Knights are coming into this game off a 5-6 season in 2024.  Not sure what to expect from them.  But, if Pikeville had the defensive trouble against CAL, it could cause trouble this week.

Week 3 will have Raceland coming to town in the #1 position and I expect the Rams to win that match-up.

Pikeville follows the Raceland game with Johnson Central, who I, again, expect to beat the Panthers.

Week 5 sees the Panthers matched up against Belfry.  I think this will be a competitive game that could go either way, but I think it's possible for Belfry to win.

What do you think?  Will Pikeville start the season 0-5?

Based on your comments above, you think Raceland is better than Belfry?

Since they haven't played an actual game, it would be speculation based on a scrimmage.  But, to make that speculation, I think Raceland would have beaten Belfry two weeks ago if they played an actual game instead of a scrimmage.

Which makes the Central/Belfry game more interesting.

I’m going to say yes. And be right in the thick of it at the end of the season.

I thought Pikeville looked tough early against CAL.

I’m not sure how Midland looks, but those other three should be battles too. Heck of a schedule by McNamee.

It's too early to read a ton into it, but Calpreps predicts:

  • Pikeville 28, Cabell Midland 22
  • Raceland 24, Pikeville 8
  • Johnson Central 38, Pikeville 14
  • Belfry 31, Pikeville 28

Oh, I agree about the post season. I was looking at schedules and thought, “holy crap, Pikeville could start the season 0-5”.

it kind of reminds me of an NCC team, I think early 2000s, started 0-5 and ended 10-5 with a State Championship.

Started the season 1-4, but correct finished 5-5 then went on a tear in the playoffs.

Reminds me of a couple years ago when PT and belfry both went 4-6 in the regular reason and both ended up in the state finals in 2021. I believe Belfry started 0-5 or 1-4 or something like that.

More votes they would start 0-5 than not. Pikeville in control at the moment.

0-5, not going to happen. Midland was their best change of stopping that from happening.

1-4?  Still a very strong possibility. We will see how they respond next week and should have a better read on the Panthers for 2025.
