Middle School turf fields?

I'm not sure I follow....how will centering the goal posts change the proximity of the field and sidelines to the bleachers?

The field is offset away from the stands.  To center up the field with the goal posts in their current location, they would have to shift the field towards the stands.

  • To further clarify my above answer - this is Owensboro MIddle’s school and field - bleachers, concessions, turf field and I believe the track has been redone.

Those goal posts would probably not be salvageable at this point, as those are the original ones from Scott's football field.

  • Yep. And the bluegrass patches came over from Scott's field as well. The dirt removed when Scott installed their turf field was used to fill in what used to be a very uneven, sloped field. The bleache

@Colonels_Wear_Blue It is the goal post on the left that throws it off.  If you go 80' from center of gp, it would put the sideline next to or even through a small portion of the concrete pad/stands.

Ahhh....my assumption was to move the goal posts rather than moving the field.

I'm not sure how feasible it is to actually take a goal posts out and still have them salvageable to reinstall, but worst comes to worst, new goal posts run $4-5K each. They could just install one at a time, if need be. I played club rugby in college and we played on PLENTY of rugby pitches that only had one set of goal posts. It just means you have to move an occasional FG or PAT attempt down to the other end of the field. Just a thought.

Yep. And the bluegrass patches came over from Scott's field as well. The dirt removed when Scott installed their turf field was used to fill in what used to be a very uneven, sloped field. The bleachers came from SK when their field was updated. Basically a bunch of repurposed, re-used parts were used to create a usable field.

Summitview in Independence also has their own stadium.   It's grass.  There are plans for Turkey Foot to get a field in the next few years, since they are the only Kenton County middle school without a home field.  They have zero home games the past two seasons.  For some reason they can't get any home games at Dixie Heights, even though Dixie let's the youth team play games there.

They played Tichenor at Dixie two years ago. During the fall boys and girls soccer practice and have games on the field. Football practices and has freshman and JV games. The band also practices on the field. So four programs with a variety of programs with some sub varsity programs who all make their game schedules at different points of the year and at times must reschedule due to weather. That becomes a complex puzzle Monday through Friday.

I get that, but there is time.  As I stated, they have no problem giving the youth program (not officially affiliated with Dixie Heights) and the flag football on the weekends.  Band almost never gets the field.  I know it's complex and a lot, but that's what ADs get paid to do is to figure all that out.

Dixie's freshman only had 2 home games last year. 4 were scheduled at home and 2 had to be moved due to district soccer games.

That's awful.

I assure you Turkey Foot has no home games for the second year in a row. Last year, they had 8th grade night at St. Henry, thankfully they were gracious enough to allow that to happen.

And the field project is a few years off every time I've heard any details.  They are going to demolished the building in between Caywood and Turkey Foot first to increase parking.

It would be nice if Dixie would give priority to their middle school instead of outside organizations.  It would only impact 3 or 4 days during the season, and it could be a week night as some middle school games are during the week.

That's insane and sad to me that they can't find a way for TF to play at Dixie.

6 soccer teams and 3 football teams utilizing it for games.  4 soccer teams, 2 football teams, and band utilizing it for practice as varsity/jv soccer and football practice together.  I know the soccer team has had to utilize the baseball field for practices, and the freshman football team usually practices on the small practice field between the baseball and football fields.  It definitely makes scheduling for those outside of Dixie hard.

Youth plays their games on Saturdays/Sundays. Most middle school games are played on Thursday or Wednesday nights. Dixie's programs get first dibs on the field, which unfortunately leaves TF with not much availability to play at Dixie. I don't think it's intentional, it's just a product of not having enough space. The other Kenton County schools are in situations where it's not as much of an issue. Twenhofel and SVA have their own field, and Scott has a grass Soccer only field on which their soccer teams play a good chunk of their games, which opens the Football stadium up for Woodland, who also has a serviceable field if needed in a pinch.

Initially when the field was first assembled it wasn't a problem. Then the following year, or the year after, bleachers became available. With the steep fall off and woods to the left, and a retaining pond to the right, the bleachers kind of had to be placed where they are. When everyone realized the bleachers and fencing were only a few feet from the playing field, the decision was made to shift the field away from the bleachers. I would think the goalposts could be moved, but the field is kind of an afterthough, and the only real upgrade that's been added is the equipment shed, which the team fundraised for and had built (Former Scott and current St. Henry assistant coach was the head coach at that time). Again, the off set field is not really a big problem as field goals are so rarely attempted. Typically over the years the only actual games that get played there are makeup games or middle school JV games. Usually about 1 per year. The Taylor Mill Eagles hosted many of their games there when they first re-formed. Scott occasionally practiced there when Woolley was the head coach and they had away games coming up on grass fields. When the leaves start to turn colors in the fall, it is a really nice looking place, and could be a very nice field with a few minor enhancements.

Right, I understand all of this.  But it's not so hard that 2 outside organizations with no affiliation with the school district have no problems getting the field.  I was under the impression that district events get priority over outside entities for facility usage/rentals.

I wouldn't say Dixie Youth has no problem getting the field.  PlayFanatics likely pays a pretty penny to use the field, so that money is going to trump all on a Sunday. It was going to cost me $1250 to host 3 softball games there years ago, so I can only imagine what PlayFanatics is paying to use the place.

There are 2 issues that likely still causes TF to not have games at Dixie.  #1 is the AD at TF.  If it is the same AD from the past few years, he doesn't want to be there and doesn't put effort into doing anything leaving the coaches trying to scramble to get things done.  Prior to him was the administration as a whole.  #2 is PlayFanatics.  Without them, Dixie Youth can host games on Sundays leaving the few available Saturdays to TF to host games.

I do know Dixie Youth and TF has tried to work out running games together on Saturdays where TF plays right after Dixie Youth, or Dixie Youth plays right after TF, but they couldn't find officials to cover the later games.
